Cordelia tapped her foot anxiously. It had been three years since she had been in this office. The last time had been in the middle of a Battle. She had lost classmates, friends, people she had considered family. It had been one of the darkest days of her life.
She shuddered and pushed away the memory. She glanced around the large, circular room.
It looked so different now, gone were the silver gadgets and other trinkets with which the office had been filled when Professor Dumbledore had been Headmaster. Now, it was less cluttered, books were stacked on the table and the chairs had been replaced with wingbacks covered in red and green tartan.
She stood up when she heard the scrape of the heavy door swinging open. She smiled at the sight of the Hogwarts Headmistress. She wore robes of emerald green with a matching hat. Her dark hair, flecked with gray, was up in its usual tight bun.
Professor McGonagall returned her smile as she made her way to the desk. "Miss Diggory, I am so pleased that you could make it."
Cordelia waited for McGonagall to sit down before returning to her own wingback chair. She crossed her legs and flattened the bottom of her burgundy robes, "I wouldn't miss a meeting with you, Professor. Although, I will admit I was surprised that you called me for a meeting during the summer."
"I have something Important that I wish to discuss with you and the matter could not wait for the start of the term."
"Okay," Cordelia folded her hands in her lap, "I hope it is good news?"
"I don't know if you are aware, but Professor Hambleton has decided to retire."
Cordelia shook her head, "I hadn't heard but, it is well deserved. Professor Hambleton is an extraordinary teacher. It's a shame the future students will miss out on his classes."
McGonagall nodded, "It's true, it is quite a loss to the department. I'm sure you could understand how difficult it would be for Professor Vector to pick up all of Professor Hambleton's classes as well as her own?"
Cordelia nodded, "yes, that would be quite the undertaking, even for a professor as gifted as Professor Vector."
"When you were at Hogwarts you were an extremely gifted student and received top marks in your classes, including your studies of Arithmancy. You were a truly brilliant and gifted student."
Unsure of how to respond, Cordelia smiled, her cheeks tinged pink, "Thank you, Professor."
Professor McGonagall gave a curt nod before continuing, "and that is why I feel you would be the perfect person to replace Professor Hambleton in the upcoming term."
"W-what?" Cordelia gasped. "You want me to teach. . . here . . . at Hogwarts?"
"Yes, I would. If you are interested."
Cordelia inhaled deeply. She couldn't believe her own ears. She was being offered a position at Hogwarts. She had always dreamed of being a professor. She had figured it would take her several years before she was offered a job.
"It would be an absolute honor, Professor."
