Crimson Death didn't respond immediately. Instead, he walked over to the machine that had dispensed the envelope, examining it closely. "There's something else here," he said, his voice quiet.
Scias joined him, looking over the machine. It was old, the kind of technology that had been obsolete for decades. But it was still functional, still connected to something deeper within the facility.
Crimson Death pressed a few buttons on the machine, and to Scias's surprise, a small compartment opened, revealing a second envelope. This one was marked with a symbol—a spiral pattern surrounding a central triangle with an eye in its center, etched in a deep, metallic sheen.
"What the..." Scias started, but Crimson Death had already taken the envelope and opened it.
Inside was another sheet of paper, this one handwritten. The writing was neat, almost meticulous, and as Crimson Death read it, his expression grew darker.
"What does it say?" Scias asked, his impatience growing.
Crimson Death handed him the paper, his voice tight with anger. "It's a mission. For both of us."
Scias read the note, his eyes widening in disbelief.
"To the Nightmare and the Crimson Death,
You are both tasked with uncovering the truth about the four subjects discussed earlier. However, be warned—the deeper you go, the more dangerous the journey will become. These children are the key to understanding Project Cerberus, but they are also the key to something far darker.
The Labyrinth Organization has hidden them well, but with the cipher you hold, you will be able to find them. Their locations are scattered, but each one holds a piece of the puzzle. Find them, and you will uncover the truth about what was done to you, and why.
But beware—the Labyrinth watches your every move. Do not trust anyone, not even yourselves. The truth is not what it seems, and the Labyrinth's reach is long.
Complete the mission, and you may find redemption. Fail, and you will be consumed by the very darkness you seek to uncover.
Good luck.
- The Architect"
Scias lowered the note, his mind reeling. "The Architect...? Who the hell is that?"
Crimson Death's jaw tightened. "Someone who knows too much. But if what they're saying is true, this is our best lead. We have to follow it."
Scias nodded, though the sense of unease hadn't left him. "Then we find those children, decode the cipher, and figure out what the Labyrinth is really after."
Crimson Death folded the note and slipped it into his coat. "Agreed. But remember what the voice said—some truths are better left buried."
Scias met his gaze, determination burning in his eyes. "We'll decide that for ourselves."
With that, the two men turned and left the lab, their minds focused on the mission ahead. The truth about Project Cerberus and the Labyrinth Organization was still shrouded in mystery, but one thing was clear—they were closer than ever to uncovering the secrets that had shaped their lives.
But as they moved through the dark corridors, neither could shake the feeling that they were being watched, that the Labyrinth was already one step ahead.
And as the Architect's note had warned, the journey to uncover the truth would be fraught with danger—danger that neither of them could fully comprehend.
