Alessandro's POV
The morning sun filtered through the windows of my penthouse, casting a golden glow over the city that stretched far below. I stood by the glass, sipping my espresso, the rich aroma doing little to calm the storm brewing inside me. Power, they say, is a double-edged sword—one wrong move, and it can cut deeper than any blade. But I wield that power like a master, shaping the world around me to my will. No one defies Alessandro Moretti and walks away unscathed.
Isabella stirred in the bed, the sheets rustling as she woke. She looked at me with those piercing eyes, still sharp even in the morning light. But there was something different in them now—something more than just the hatred that had burned so fiercely when we first met. Trust. It was fragile, new, but it was there. And that trust would be my greatest weapon, as well as my most dangerous weakness.
"You're up early," she said, her voice still husky from sleep. "What's on your mind?"
I turned to face her, leaning against the window with an easy grace that belied the tension coiled within me. "Everything, Isabella. This mess with Antonio, the threats closing in on us—it all needs to be handled, and swiftly. I won't let anyone undermine my power."
She pushed herself up on the pillows, her brow furrowing. "I still can't believe Antonio would betray us like this. There has to be something we're missing."
"Maybe," I allowed, though my tone remained firm. "But we can't afford to take any chances. I've called a meeting with our top allies. We need to make sure everyone knows where their loyalties lie."
Isabella's eyes narrowed slightly. "And what if they don't? What if there's more than just Antonio working against us?"
I set down my cup, crossing the room to stand beside the bed. My hand found her chin, tilting her face up to meet my gaze. "Then I'll remind them who holds the real power in this city. I've built an empire, and I won't let it crumble because of a few traitors."
Her lips curved into a small, almost imperceptible smile. "You really are terrifying, you know that?"
I leaned down, my lips brushing against hers, savoring the tension that crackled between us. "That's why you're here with me, Isabella. You're drawn to the danger, the power. You know I can protect you from anything—anyone."
She kissed me back, her hands gripping my shoulders as if grounding herself in the moment. But when she pulled away, her expression was serious. "We need to be careful, Alessandro. This isn't just about power—it's about trust. We can't fight everyone, not without knowing who's really pulling the strings."
I nodded, though my mind was already racing ahead to the meeting I'd arranged. "Trust is earned, Isabella. And sometimes, it's tested. But in the end, it's power that decides who survives and who doesn't."
She studied me for a long moment, her gaze searching mine. "Just... don't let it consume you. Don't let it turn you into someone you can't come back from."
Her words lingered in the air, a warning I knew all too well. Power was a beast that demanded sacrifices, and I'd made plenty. But the thought of losing myself—losing what I'd become for the sake of survival—was a line I wasn't ready to cross. Not yet.
The phone on the bedside table buzzed, breaking the tension. I reached for it, the name on the screen making my blood run cold.
"It's Marco," I said, my voice tight. "He's found something."
Isabella watched as I answered the call, her eyes never leaving mine.
"Talk to me," I said, keeping my tone neutral.
