ȯ As (Name) leaned against the cool brick wall of the ice cream shop, her patience was ultimately rewarded when Yuto emerged, balancing two cups of ice cream, each brimming with appetising velvety beige swirls .
"That looks so good! Thank you, Yuto!" (Name) exclaimed, her smile spreading from ear to ear with unrestrained delight.
"It's no trouble, (Name). It's a new flavour they had... Vanilla cho... something. Whatever. Just eat it before it melts, alright?"
"Yessir!" she chirped, springing up eagerly. She carefully took the cup from Yuto's outstretched hand, recalling something she heard about holding it properly. She wrapped her small hands around it with the gentle care one would give a fragile baby chick, mindful not to squeeze too hard and risk spilling the precious thirst-quenching treat.
As they ambled along the sun-drenched pavement, the evening breeze ,a merciful reprieve from the oppressive heat of the day. The siblings walked side by side, their steps naturally falling into sync. (Name) savoured her ice cream with a slow, deliberate relish, while Yuto devoured his recklessly, barely pausing to taste the adequate sweetness as he shovelled it in.
"At this point, you might as well eat the cup and spoon too... just look at you," (Name) said, her tone tinged with both exasperation and disgust. She cast a sidelong glance at her older brother, her expression one of mild revulsion as she watched the sticky rivulets of melted ice cream trickle down his chin and onto his hands. Yuto raised the cup to his lips, slurping the remnants noisily before licking the mess off his skin without a second thought.
"EWWWWWWWWWWWW.....youre very off putting you know...," she muttered, her voice thick with genuine disdain, her stomach churning at the sight.
Yuto reciprocated with a grunt and an exaggerated roll of his eyes. "Shut up, you ungrateful brat, think about who bought that for you yeah?," he snapped, though his gaze holding a flicker of mischief as it darted down to her half-eaten treat.
"You better finish that before I do. It's looking real nice..." he teased, crossing his arms with a smirk as he turned his attention to the colourful, padlocked storefronts on the opposite side of the street.
"NO PLEASE!" she yelped with a fake sob, hurriedly eating two spoonfuls at once, furrowing her brows .The solacing silence enveloping them once again, her mind going blank once more with the constant flow of thoughts in her mind slowly clearing. she shifts her gaze left, taking in the tranquil expanse of the sea. The sun hung low on the horizon, its golden beams igniting the waters with gaudy shades of pink, red, and orange giving it a sweet, placid and crystalline view easing the fears of terrors it holds. The scene painted a serene, empyrean backdrop, casting the siblings in a soft, reflective light as they continued their walk, the cawing of seagulls and whispers of the briny fitting into the picture painted landscape.
As they wandered along the promenade, (Name)'s restless eyes traced the path's railing, observing the chips and gaps upon the metal until they came to an abrupt halt. Her gaze fixed on two familiar figures sitting at the edge of the path behind the barrier. She scrutinised their silhouettes, her mind racing to place where she had seen those distinctive hair colours before—then it clicked.
"It's Rin and that older guy again!" she thought with a surge of triumph, pleased with herself for remembering them this time. Her eyes locked onto the pair as she and Yuto passed by, her curiosity piqued by the unspoken bond that seemed to tether the two boys together. She watched them intently, intrigued by the quiet familiarity and the unspoken communication that seemed to flow effortlessly between them.
Suddenly, (Name) felt a tightening in her throat, the sensation quickly escalated into a constriction that made each breath more laboured. She let out a strained cough, her voice cracking as she tried to speak. "Yuto, do you have any water?" she asked, her tone, faint but with an unmistakable note of panic.
"Sorry, (Name), we're all out... are you okay?" Yuto asked, his expression softening with concern as he patted her back gently.
Without warning, (Name) dropped to her knees, her grip on the ice cream cup weakening until it fell, splattering onto the ground. She clutched at her throat, her breaths coming in shallow, ragged gasps as her coughs grew more violent and desperate.
"(Name)?! Are you alright? What's—oh, shit?..." Yuto's voice quivered, panic flaring in his eyes as he glanced down at the spilled ice cream on the pavement. "Is that chocolate? And nuts?,.. oh so thats what it was, vanilla choconut huh?...im so dumb " he muttered under his breath, his hands hovering anxiously over his sister's shaking shoulders. He stared at the mess, his mind racing as the vanilla swirled with the chocolate in a sticky puddle. His heart pounded as he realised the severity of the situation. His first instinct was to grab her EpiPen, but after frantically patting his pockets, he felt nothing but the crushing absence of it. "Damn it, where's my phone..."
With trembling fingers, he fished his phone from his pocket and dialled emergency services, his free hand still resting protectively on (Name)'s shoulder as she wheezed and gasped for air.
"Sae? What's happening over there?" Rin asked, glancing back at the commotion behind them, his voice tinged with curiosity.
"Uh... just some weirdos," Sae said dismissively with an insouciant shrug, his brows furrowing as he took in the scene. "We should probably head back home anyway. Uh c'mon, Rin." He clambered over the railing, extending his hand to his younger brother.
"If you say so..." Rin replied, slipping through the gap in the railing and clasping Sae's hand. The two brothers began to walk away, their silhouettes slowly dissolving into the dusk as the sun dipped lower, painting over the gloaming gradient with the deep purples and blues of approaching night.
Sae cast one last glance over his shoulder towards the maelstrom, his expression unreadable, before he and Rin turned the corner and disappeared. Meanwhile, Yuto stayed by (Name)'s side, his heart hammering in his chest as he waited helplessly for the ambulance, the once soothing evening now enshrouded in tension and urgency.
