Chapter Eight -
Wolfsbane Poisoning
•••I heard the sounds of consistent beeping slowly get louder and louder as I gained consciousness.
When I opened my eyes I was greeted by bright white lights causing me to blink harshly, before jumping up in panic and ripping out the needles from my skin, which caused the heart rate monitor to go flat.
"Oh, good morning Princess." A woman in blue nurse clothing came from around the corner. "I hope you've slept well." She said walking closer to the bed I lay on, before taking the heart rate monitor plug from the wall to stop the overbearing sound.
"Where am I?" I managed to croak out, carefully watching the lady as she stood close by the bed.
"I'm so sorry dear, this all must be so confusing for you." She apologised "I'm Genesis, I am the pack doctor for the Red Moonlight pack."
I felt a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I was able to breathe properly at the thought of not being captured by my family, which meant there was still time for me to escape.
"You were brought to me cause it seems as though you have sustained a few rather serious injuries." Genesis informs me, picking up a clipboard.
"I'm fine, my wolf will heal them in time." I groan, lying up in the hospital bed.
"Well that's the thing... your wolf is dying." She broke to me. I saw the look of worry in her eyes, fearful of how I would react but all I could do is open and close my mouth in shock like a goldfish.
"How-how can that be possible?" I stutter, looking at her in shock, hoping she would have the answers on how to save her before it would be too late.
"When you were brought to me, I did a few standard tests to make sure your body was healing the way it should, and one of those tests was an aconite test."
"Aconite?" I say in disbelief.
"Wolfsbane." She thinned her lips and nodded, confirming my suspicions.
"You have enough Wolfsbane in your body to kill the average wolf, hell, there's enough in there to comatose an Alpha." She empathised.
"How is that possible?" I say in shock, shaking my head refusing to believe it.
How could wolfsbane end up in my blood?
For all of my life I was surrounded by security who vowed to put their life on the line to keep me safe, so it couldn't of been true.
"Thats what we're trying to figure out Princess." She said, tossing through the pages on her clipboard. "Now if you wouldn't mind answering some of the questions I have for you, so I can narrow down the right medication that will work best for you."
"I guess." I frown not pleased at thought of taking some witch doctors medicine.
"Have you ever shifted?" She started off, looking at her clipboard then at me with a pen in hand ready to note down my answers.
"Yes. Once when I was thirteen" I glimpsed at the memory. The pain my little body endured as all my bones broke in my body.
All I remembered was the scared eyes of my parents as they stood around me, watching as I transformed into the beast I was.
"Judging from your expression, it wasn't a good shift?" She asked, ready to note down another answer.
"No." I say, not wanting to go into detail and share a vulnerable moment with someone I didn't know.
"When was the last time you communicated with your wolf?"
"Um, I don't know." I say unsure, trying to push past the migraine in my head to remember.
