"What do you mean so Hades is still after you?" I ask my band mate and best friend. I am not entire sure I've heard him correctly.
"Just what I asked. Does that mean Hades is still after me?" Devin answers. Charli is just staring at Devin like he's grown another head. I know the feeling. I am doing the same thing.
"You KNEW Hades was after you?" Charli sputters out.
"I cheated Death. I don't know how, but I should be dead right now. I found the suicide note I was intending to leave behind. There's a gap – I remember writing it and I remember waking up on the bathroom floor with a headache and a cut on my arm. But why would I write a suicide note and then not do it? That makes no sense." Devin explains.
I can almost see the wheels turning in Charli's head. I want so much to pry, but that would make me a hypocrite. Suddenly Charli speaks up. "Ok, so Hades is after you because you cheated Death. If he really wanted you dead, then he'd make Cryptia yank your soul out and drag you across the Styx to the Underworld. He doesn't want you dead, he wants you trapped. Why?"
"I honestly have no idea." Devin replies. "If I knew, maybe I could figure out a way out of this."
"The only way out of this is if I go to the Styx, find your damn soul, and pull you out." Charli snaps. I can feel the anger radiating from her. I'm just not yet sure why she is pissed. "Devin Sola, what the fuck did you do to piss Hades off? And how long have you been hopeless? Because that is literally the ONLY way Hades can snatch your soul and toss it into the damn Styx!"
"I don't fucking know!!" Devin yells back. I am not used to Devin yelling. "If I knew don't you think I'd have told you by now? The only thing I can think of is cheating Death. That's IT."
"It's not just cheating Death. People have been doing that for millennia and he's never done this to any of them. There's another reason." Charli growls.
"Who is Cryptia?" I ask, trying to diffuse the situation.
"Cryptia is Death – the Angel of Death to be exact." Charli spits. "She's also my twin sister."
