Today is the first day of 11th grade at a brand new school and I am not thrilled.
I recently moved to Chicago after living in Lancaster, PA for my entire life, and I already know I'm gonna be bullied as I was at my old school.I'm wearing a shirt that states I am deaf in case my hearing aids aren't enough of a hint.
As soon as I walked into school, it felt like all eyes were on me.
I put my things into my locker and was on my way to class.
I made it and was greeted by my teacher in sign.
She then made an announcement to the class, while signing so I knew what she was saying.
"Attention, everyone. We have a new student at our school this year, this is Helena and she is deaf. If you don't know sign language, that is okay, you can write notes to her."
The class waved to me.
I waved back and thought, maybe this isn't going to be so bad after all.I sat down next to a girl who was writing something in her notebook. She tore the page out and handed it to me.
The note read:"Hi Helena, I'm Wendy Taylor. Would you like to be friends? I don't know sign language but we can communicate through notes."
I looked at her and nodded. She smiled and gave me a thumbs up.
-Time Skip-
It was now time for lunch. I brought my pen and notebook, like I always did at my old school, so people can communicate with me.
I got my food and sat down next to Wendy. For a little while, we were writing questions for each other so we could get to know each other.
I then looked up to see a boy at another table looking at me. It wasn't a judgmental look, though. It was a look of admiration. I immediately looked down at my notebook to write something to Wendy.
"Hey, do you know who that boy over there in the black Nike t-shirt is?"
I passed the notebook and pen to Wendy.
She then wrote back:"Yeah, that's Austin Boyd. He's pretty popular, all the girls in our grade like him. Do you like him or something? Lol"
I rolled my eyes as I read it.
"No, it's not that. It's just that he was looking at me and I wanted to know who he was."
"He probably likes you!!" she wrote back.
I looked at her shaking my head.
After lunch, I went to English.
I couldn't focus much because for some reason, all I could think of was Austin Boyd.He was kinda cute.
