Chapter1

Physicist & World Champion 物理学家 & 世界冠军

[part1]

Berlin, Germany

The sky was a little cloudy, with tiny raindrops fluttering, the air was filled with the chill of early spring.

The taxi Shen RuPan* was riding in paused for a while in the rain. Upon arriving at The Deutsches General Hospital, the Spinal Surgery Department was already crowded with patients.

*Shen RuPan 沈如磐 - the female lead's name. Shen沈, the surname; RuPan如磐, her given name

The high-definition display screen introduced the clinical trial of the new generation of intervertebral disc prosthesis experiments. The trial will select a fixed amount of patients with lumbar spondylosis*, perform prosthesis replacement surgery, and then verify the clinical effects.

*Lumbar Spondylosis is an age-related degeneration of the vertebrae and disks of the lower back. It is a spinal disease often caused by the aging of humans.

Germany's orthopedics ranks among the best in the world, and the new prosthesis is closer to normal human intervertebral discs in terms of mechanical properties and stiffness. As soon as the news came out, patients from all over the world rushed here, hoping to undergo surgeries to relieve their pain. However, the number of experimental subjects is limited, and most people's hopes are doomed to fail.

Shen RuPan received the 'Volunteer Registration Form' from the nurse, but did not fill in her personal information immediately. Instead, she opened the translation software on her phone and converted the long passages of German at the bottom of the form into Chinese- it was the risk notice.

Damage to nerves.

Damage to large blood vessels.

Spinal instability...

Various complications, big and small, mild and severe. The notice filled two whole sheets of paper. Shen RuPan was studying whether these risks would endanger her career, while the other patients quickly filled out the registration forms, one after another.

An old lady saw her carefully looking at the risk notice and couldn't help holding back, "I have had that spinal disease for more than ten years, with the pain so severe I almost gave up on living. These risks are nothing compared to the pain. I don't even expect a hundred percent full recovery. (German)"

Shen RuPan did not reply.

She held the pen while her mind was spinning, thinking about the advantages and disadvantages over and over, until the registration deadline approached, she barely managed to fill out the form and submit it.

Next, participants will be interviewed by the volunteers and the jury (doctor).

The core figure of the jury is Dr. Fein, a leading medical expert in the field of spinal deformity, having a very strict criterion for choosing patients. Patients were called into the doctor's room for interviews one by one, each having different emotions on their faces after stepping out of the door, either happy or sad.

Shen RuPan sat quietly in the corner from the beginning to the end, showing little to no emotions except for her tightly clenched hands.

Her face was covered by sunglasses, and her features weren't visible. But judging by her looks, it was obvious she was a neat and good-looking woman. She had a perfectly sculpted body and slender legs. She looked normal. It was only when it was her turn to interview, that she stood up and started walking, her posture was twisted and wrong, caused by her severe spinal injury.
