Fire.Everywhere.
While my father holds me tight and my mother leads the way into the forest, all I hear are screams, gunshots, and the sound of metal clashing.
It's the Marines. They're killing all of us.
We are a special race of humans, able to use magic as we wish. But ever since the pirate era began, we've been seen as threats to the world.
We're not bad people. We live peacefully with everyone, in harmony with nature. But the government feels threatened, so they've chosen to kill us all.
I may be young, but I don't want to die. I don't want my mother or father to die. I want us to live.
As we reach the edge of the forest, my father sets me down and wipes away my tears.
"Yumi, you've got to listen closely, okay," my mother says.
I nod at her words.
"You need to be a big girl now. Don't cry, don't make a sound, and leave when I tell you to. she pulls something out of her back. ''Take this book, and no matter what happens, don't let go of it... My beautiful daughter... I love you so much," my mother says, her voice breaking as she starts to sob.
"I gave birth to you so you could live a long and fulfilled life, and that is what I want you to do."
My parents embrace me, and I know this is the last time I will ever feel their warmth.
"Now go, Yumi, and no matter what happens, don't look back."
"I think there's more over here," a man's voice said.
I ran into the forest and hid behind a large tree, making no noise. I peeked around to where my father was being held at gunpoint and my mother had a blade pressed against her throat by marine officers.
"Where is she?" one of the marines asked in a threatening voice.
Both my parents remained silent.
"WHERE IS SHE?" he shouted.
"We are not going to tell you," my father said.
"Well, I hope she was worth your lives," the marine officer replied.
Bang.
the officers shot my father in the head and slit my mother's throat. making blood go everywhere.
I covered my mouth to muffle a scream. My eyes were wide with shock at what had just happened. All I could think about was what my mother had said.
I have to be strong and not cry.
I have to survive.
So I ran.
And ran.
And ran.
.
After hours of running, I fell to my knees. Every breath felt like my throat was on fire.
"I think I'm safe now." I set down the book my parents gave me and opened it. It was a book on learning magic. I smiled and started crying again. My mother had promised to teach me how to use it. She had the most beautiful magic I had ever seen. As farmers, she grew the most vibrant flowers in our garden, the tastiest vegetables and fruits, the most delicious teas, and always had the best herbs when I was sick. I had always wanted to be like her. Now, I can't.
I continued through the forest, with no end in sight. I have no idea how long I'll have to keep going, but I will keep on going no matter what. I'm going to survive!
.
It had been about five days. I was severely dehydrated and hungry. I didn't know how much longer I could survive. If this continued for another day, I was afraid I would die. My vision was getting blurry, and I could barely make sense of what was going on around me.
"Whoa!" I shouted as I tripped and started to fall, only to realize I was about to go over a cliff. I clung to my head as best as I could to minimize the injuries while tumbling down the steep incline.
Slowly, I tried to get up and rubbed a spot on my back that was sure to bruise. Aside from that, it didn't seem like I had any severe injuries. I looked up at the cliff and thought, How am I supposed to get back up there? Maybe it was better to continue from down here. I took a deep breath and turned in the other direction, where I saw... an end. The end of the forest! I found it! I ran towards the bright light and emerged from the trees. The sun, previously blocked by the towering forest, now bathed my face in warmth. I closed my eyes, savoring the sunlight. There was a small river flowing out from the forest. I smiled. I made it.
"Who are you?"
"Huh?" I opened my eyes and looked towards the voice. A green-haired boy was sitting by the river. I opened my mouth to speak, but everything went black before I could say a word.
