The Storm

In the village of Lineville, a chilly and murky night enveloped the landscape, wrapping it in a cloak of foreboding. The winds shrieked ominously, heralding the arrival of a storm that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Curtains danced in the gusts, their movements erratic and frantic, while trees bent under the pressure, their leaves rustling like whispers of warning. As rain fell steadily from the weeping heavens, it drummed against rooftops and splashed against the ground, creating a symphony of sound that echoed the turmoil in the sky.

"It can't possibly rain any harder than this." Willen whispered in the shadowy alley. He glanced at the meager piece of bread clutched in his grimy hand, meant to sustain both him and his sister. With a quick look at the overcast sky, he tucked the bread into his pocket and dashed across the street, trying to avoid getting soaked.

As he sprinted through the rain-soaked streets, the cold droplets pelted Willen's skin, mingling with the adrenaline coursing through his veins. The city was a blur of shadows and shimmering reflections, the neon lights flickering like distant stars in the stormy night. Suddenly, a flicker of light caught his eye, illuminating a figure standing in the mouth of a narrow alleyway. "What could he possibly be doing smoking at this hour?"

Willen wondered, his curiosity piqued despite the danger that lurked in the darkness. Without a second thought, he crept closer, instinctively trying to merge with the shadows of the buildings that loomed around him.

The rain drummed a relentless rhythm on the pavement, masking his footsteps as he edged nearer. As he peered into the alley, he noticed another man beside the smoker, his gestures wild and erratic, rambling incoherently as if caught in the throes of some fevered delusion. The smoker, a tall figure with a hardened face, shot him an irritated glance, his jaw clenched tight, a storm brewing behind his eyes. In a swift, brutal motion, the smoker seized the other man's throat, his fingers tightening like a vice. Willen's heart raced as he watched the scene unfold, panic surging through him; he felt utterly powerless, a mere spectator to the violence that was about to erupt.

The man gasped for breath, his eyes wide with terror, and Willen's instincts screamed at him to turn and run, to escape the nightmare that was unfolding before him. But he was rooted to the spot, horrified and entranced. The sickening sound of bones cracking echoed in his ears, a visceral reminder of the fragility of life.

Willen clamped a hand over his mouth, stifling a gasp as he fought to suppress the rising bile in his throat. The world around him faded, the rain becoming a distant murmur as he focused solely on the brutal act before him. With a sickening thud, the other man collapsed, lifeless, his body crumpling to the ground like a discarded puppet.

The smoker stood over him for a moment, a dark silhouette against the flickering light, before stepping out of the alley and into the street, leaving chaos behind. Willen's breath came in shallow gasps, his mind racing as he processed the horror he had just witnessed. He faced the man in horror. The man halted and turned to Willen to fix his piercing crimson gaze and chilling grin spreading across his face.

Time seemed to stretch infinitely as Willen felt the weight of the man's stare, as if he were being stripped bare, exposed to the very core of his being. In a moment of sheer desperation, he squeezed his eyes shut and shouted, "HEY!!" The word echoed through the empty streets, a futile attempt to break the spell of fear that had gripped him.

But when he opened his eyes again, the man had vanished, leaving only the lingering chill of dread in the air.Willen spun around, his heart racing, scanning the dimly lit area in disbelief. The rain continued to pour, washing away the remnants of the encounter, but it did nothing to cleanse the horror that had just unfolded.
