After another exhausting day at school, Peti trudged home, his steps slow and heavy. The oppressive weight of the school year hung over him, and the thought of summer vacation brought little relief. For most kids, summer meant freedom and fun, but for Peti, it was just a different kind of loneliness. The thought of another long, uneventful summer stretched out before him, filled with nothing but endless days of isolation and the lingering echoes of his torment.

He pushed open the door to the small, dimly lit apartment that he called home. The air inside was stale, the rooms eerily silent, a stark contrast to the noisy, crowded halls of the orphanage where he still technically lived. The orphanage had granted him a small space to live independently, a concession to his age, but it was a cold, empty place—a reflection of the emptiness that had seeped into his life.

Peti dropped his backpack by the door, kicking off his worn shoes with a tired sigh. He walked over to the window and stared out at the world beyond, the summer sun shining brightly, taunting him with its warmth. But the light didn't reach him. It felt distant, like a world he wasn't a part of.

Just as he was about to collapse onto the old, sagging couch, his phone buzzed in his pocket. The sound was a small surprise in the quiet apartment. He pulled it out, expecting nothing more than a notification or some junk message. But when he saw the name on the screen, his heart lifted just a little.

Katie.

Katie was his one friend, the one bright spot in an otherwise bleak existence. She was a bit of an oddball—nerdy, with wild red hair that always seemed to be in disarray, red-framed glasses that were too big for her face, and a pair of sharp, intelligent eyes that seemed to miss nothing. She was a year younger than Peti but had a way of making him feel like the younger one, with her quick wit and unshakable confidence.

Katie: Hey, Peti! Summer's here! Got any plans?

Peti smiled faintly as he typed back, knowing full well what his answer would be.

Peti: Hey, Katie. Nah, not really. Just the usual—nothing much. You?

There was a short pause before her reply came in, and Peti could almost picture her, sitting at her cluttered desk, surrounded by books and gadgets, her face lit up by the glow of her computer screen.

Katie: Well, you're in luck, my friend! I've got a plan, and it involves you. We're not going to let this summer be boring.

Peti: Oh? What have you got in mind?

Katie: Meet me at the park tomorrow morning, by the old oak tree. I'll tell you everything then. It's gonna be awesome, trust me!

Peti's curiosity was piqued, though he wasn't sure what Katie had in store. She was always coming up with wild ideas, some more successful than others. But anything was better than sitting alone in his apartment, drowning in his thoughts.

Peti: Okay, sounds good. See you tomorrow then.

Katie: Great! Be there at 10, and don't be late!

Peti put his phone down, a small smile lingering on his lips. Maybe, just maybe, this summer wouldn't be as bad as he feared. With Katie around, there was always the possibility of something unexpected, something that might take him away from the darkness that had become all too familiar.

He settled down on the couch, the tension in his body slowly easing as he allowed himself to imagine what Katie had planned. Whatever it was, at least he wouldn't be facing it alone.

And for Peti, that was enough.

The next morning, Peti made his way to the park with a sense of cautious optimism. The park was a small, green oasis amidst the concrete sprawl of the city. It was where Peti and Katie had shared countless conversations, and he hoped that today might bring some much-needed distraction from his ongoing struggles.
