Chapter Thirteen
Janet and Joey walked out of the hotel, anticipating the day ahead. Their first order of business was to head to the phone store to pick up Janet's replacement iPhone. Fortunately, Joey had taken the initiative to call ahead and order the phone, so when they arrived at the store, they had to pick it up since it had already been paid for. After finishing the task quickly, Janet returned to her hotel to answer her emails. Shortly after, she conducted a Zoom meeting with her manager to review the upcoming appearances she was scheduled to make upon returning to the United States.
Janet found herself at her wits end. For the rest of the day, and her mind naturally wandered to thoughts of Toni. Part of her wanted to go and see Toni, but she also didn't want to risk any potential disagreement or drama at this particular moment. Janet wasn't in the right frame to deal with any conflict, so she decided it would be best to keep her distance for now.
Janet found herself in her spacious bedroom, feeling utterly bored and restless. Despite completing all her tasks for the day, she couldn't shake off the sense of ennui that had settled over her. Lying on the oversized, luxuriously plush bed in her hotel suite, she couldn't escape the feeling of solitude that crept over her. It dawned on her that she despised being alone in bed and longed for Toni's comforting presence beside her. Janet couldn't shake the heartache of realizing Toni was unwilling to rekindle their relationship. "What's wrong with me?" she wondered, her thoughts consumed by memories of their first encounter.
Janet walked across the carpeted floor of her bedroom, the soft fibers cushioning each step until she reached the sleek dresser that held the stereo system. With a gentle click, she plugged her phone into the system and began playing "On Guard," a captivating song by her current favorite artist, Lauren Jauregui.
Feline with the instinct
Cosmic intuition
I know the truth before it's given
I can read it in your feelings
Take some patience and persistence
Time and precision
My trust is not easily given
You gotta wait on my permissionTo open me up
Take a look under my heart
Run your hands over my scars
May be too much
So I gotta see who you are
Before you inspire the art
So calm down
There's no need to rush now
Won't let it go too farOn God
Staying on guard
Gotta watch out for my heart
Never really know someone, one
So I'll keep a distance between
The thought of you and me
Never really know someone, one, oneYeah
(Never really know someone, one)
Yeah
You tell me not to block my blessings, but I'm blessed on my own
I use my breakups to get in the zone
You don't wanna be a song
Don't be the reason I'm mad and alone
I know not to make a person my home
My guard up like Floyd, up like North, uptight boy
I can't do it if it don't bring me the utmost joy like, ah-ah, ah-ahSo, on God
Staying on guard
Gotta watch out for my heart
Never really know someone
'Til you really know someone
You just wanna hold someoneHe been missed
East Atlanta love letter then I duck off quick
Fall in love on some deep end shit
Don't try to rush, you break my heart, baby, 'cause my defense litOn God
Staying on guard
Gotta watch out for my heart
Never really know someone, one
So I'll keep (I'll keep)
A distance between (a distance between)
The thought of you and me
Never really know someone, one, oneOne
You never really know someone
