Hogwarts

---

After their conversation, the rest of the night went smoothly. They arrived at Hogwarts just two hours later and headed to the Great Hall. Y/n listened to Dumbledore's speech as usual, occasionally glancing over at the Slytherin table where Snape sat. After eating, she made her way to the Gryffindor common room. The next morning, she woke up, got dressed, and headed to the Great Hall.

Y/n was humming a tune as she sat next to her brother and his friends at the Gryffindor table. "Good morning, Y/n," the group said in unison.

"So, are you going to approach him today?" Peter asked. Y/n looked over at the Slytherin table and then turned back to Peter. "I'll try, but I'm not sure if he'd want to talk to me," she shrugged. James smirked. "Remember, there's money on the line," he said.

"I know, James. What class do you all have first?" Y/n asked.

"Potions," Sirius replied.

"Charms," said Peter.

"Ugh, you're so lucky. I have Muggle Studies first," James said. Remus didn't respond, his gaze drifting to Sirius. Remus had always had a crush on Sirius, who, of course, was oblivious.

"Moony, are you alright? Y/n asked what class you had first," Sirius said, concern in his voice.

"I'm—" Remus began, but Lily Evans arrived. "Hi, guys," she said with a bright smile. Y/n didn't know Lily well and wasn't particularly interested in getting to know her. She thought it unfair how Lily toyed with James's feelings—she obviously liked him but never admitted it.

"Hi, Lily-Flower," James cooed. Lily rolled her eyes playfully and ignored him, a light blush forming on her cheeks. "Hello, Y/n," she said as she sat down.

"Hi, Lily," Y/n replied, glancing at her watch. She quickly got up. "It's time for first period, guys!" Everyone scrambled and ran to their first classes, all running late. Y/n made it to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, sighing when she saw only one seat left—and it was right next to Severus Snape. Usually, students from different years didn't have classes together, but Dark Arts was an exception, with 5th through 7th years sharing the class.

She sat down quietly next to him. He was completing an essay that had been assigned. 'He looks so peaceful,' Y/n thought. "Are you just going to sit there and stare at me, Black? Or are you actually going to do your work?" he sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. It wasn't her, but her brother who had bullied him, yet Snape still didn't like her.

Y/n ignored his rude comment and focused on her task: making Snape kiss her within the month. "I'm sorry, you're right," she said with a slight smile and turned away, starting her work. Snape was confused by her behavior. She tried to act like her brother but was much kinder in their few interactions. Maybe she's different? he thought, quickly shaking off the idea and returning to his work.

Halfway through the class, Y/n turned to Severus and tapped him on the shoulder. "Do you have an extra quill I can borrow? Mine just broke." He sighed, took one out, and handed it to her. She mumbled a quiet thank you before continuing. Severus didn't like the Marauders or Lily anymore, but Y/n was the only person he could tolerate. She had never said anything mean about or to him, unlike everyone else at the school.

As the class was nearing the end, Y/n realized she hadn't made much progress. Striking up a conversation was proving harder than she thought. She quickly came up with something and turned to Severus. "I've seen you reading under that tree outside the Great Hall. You must really like books."

Severus looked at her and replied, "I do sometimes, yes," his voice monotone and disinterested.

"That's great! I like to read as well," she said. This intrigued Severus, though he remained cautious. "What's your favorite book?" he asked.

"'To Kill a Mockingbird.' It's intriguing to reread," she replied with a smile.

He nodded, letting out a small smile himself. Y/n's smile faltered as she continued. "Look, Severus, I'm really sorry for what my brother and the Marauders did to you and for what they continue to do. I also apologize for my part in it. If you're open to it, I'd like to start over and maybe become friends?" She looked into his eyes as she spoke.

"You can't help what your brother and friends have done. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable being friends right now, but maybe in the future," Snape said, still hesitant. He wasn't sure if she was sincere or if he was being set up. Either way, he remained cautious. Y/n sighed softly and nodded. "Take your time, Snape. I'll be here whenever you're ready to accept my friendship. Until then, I'll show you how good of a friend I can be."

The class ended shortly after their conversation. Y/n went on to her remaining classes as usual. At dinner, she decided not to sit with the Marauders but with Snape instead, hoping it might be a good opportunity to get to know him better.

Y/n walked over to the Slytherin table and sat down between Severus and Bellatrix. She didn't mind her cousin but they hadn't been close. "Hi, Bella," she greeted her cousin, then turned to Snape. "Hello, Snape," she smiled.

Snape looked at her with little expression. "Hi, Y/n," he replied in his usual monotone.

Bellatrix smiled at her cousin before returning to her conversation with her friend. "How were your classes?" Y/n asked.

"They were alright," Severus replied. The two continued talking and getting to know each other until dinner was over. As they went their separate ways to their respective common rooms, Y/n went to sleep thinking about the progress she had made that day.
