"Ivypool, what's wrong? You're hurt!" Dovewing's yowl woke Ivypool up. The pale gray she-cat was staring at her matted pelt anxiously. "It's okay, Dovewing. It feels better than it looks." Ivypool knew that it was a lie, for they stung, but she didn't want Dovewing to call Jayfeather again. Her soft sister never thought that Ivypool could look after herself.
Shaking her sister off, Ivypool stepped out of the apprentices' den, hastily giving herself a quick grooming to hide her wounds. "Hey Ivypool! Do you want to join us in patrolling the ShadowClan border?" Lionblaze called from the clearing from where he stood beside Cinderheart. No, thanks! Ivypool inwardly groaned, but forced herself to sound cheerful as she mewed, "Sure! Can we add Toadstep too?" The golden and gray tabby warriors had been very close lately; she didn't want to stay with them alone in case they got too soppy.
Heading towards the border, Lionblaze and Cinderheart took the lead, murmuring softly to each other and their pelts almost brushing. Wrinkling her nose, Ivypool realised that Toadstep had seen them too. "I wonder what it feels like to have a mate. I would really like to have one too!" the black-and-white tom wondered aloud, glancing at Ivypool as if he were embarrassed to tell her this.
Ivypool almost gagged, but she forced herself to purr comfortingly, "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find the perfect cat for you one day!" "Thanks, Ivypool! But right now I feel like the warrior code is kind of stupid... if it wasn't there, I might have found a mate long ago!"
Immediately, Ivypool's ears flicked forward and she listened eagerly. Toadstep looked guilty; he looked afraid that she was going to repost him. Leaving him, she strode forward, excitedly sending her thoughts to the sky, Hawkfrost, did you hear that? We've got another possible recruit after all!
