000. THE SUN DIPPED LOW BEHIND THE ROWS OF SUBURBAN HOUS , casting long shadows across the quiet streets as the last bell rang at Parkview High School. Students flooded out of the building, laughing and chatting, their voices a mixture of excitement and relief. For Georgia Abioye, the day had felt like a marathon, but now, standing at the edge of the steps, she could finally catch her breath. Her eyes scanned the crowd, searching for the familiar faces of her friends.
"Georgia!" A voice called out, cutting through the noise. She turned to see Benj Nielsen hurrying towards her, his sketchbook clutched protectively under his arm. His face was a little flushed, probably from sprinting to catch up with her. "You won't believe what just happened."
Georgia raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "What is it? Did Mrs. Carter finally give you that A on your art project?"
Benj shook his head, a small grin playing at the corners of his lips. "Better. We just got invited to the biggest party of the year."
She blinked, processing his words. "Wait, *we* got invited? Like, you, me, and—"
"And the whole gang," Benj interrupted, his excitement bubbling over. "I just ran into Josh at the lockers. He said his cousin's throwing a party this Friday night, and we’re on the list."
Georgia's mind raced. A party. The first real high school party. This was the kind of thing she’d only seen in movies, the kind of night that could make or break your reputation. Suddenly, she felt a mix of excitement and dread twisting in her stomach.
"Who else knows?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Not many yet," Benj said, glancing around. "I think Josh wanted to tell everyone in person, you know, keep it low-key until the last minute."
"Yeah, low-key," Georgia echoed, though she doubted anything about this party would stay low-key for long. "What do you think? Should we go?"
Benj hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't know... I mean, it's kind of intimidating, right? But it could also be... fun?"
"Fun," Georgia repeated, almost like she was testing the word on her tongue. She looked out at the crowd of students, all of them moving with a purpose, like they had somewhere to be, something to do. Was this what high school was supposed to feel like? A constant push and pull between fear and excitement? She sighed, glancing back at Benj. "Okay, we’re going. But we need to talk to the others first."
As they walked towards the courtyard, Georgia felt her nerves kick in. She’d always been confident—at least, she liked to think she was—but this was different. This was stepping into unknown territory, and no one knew what to expect.
They found the rest of their group gathered by the old oak tree, the unofficial meeting spot since the first day of school. Lucy Ramirez, their bubbly and ever-optimistic friend, was chatting animatedly with Josh while Amber Lin, who was more reserved but had a sharp wit, leaned against the tree, listening.
"Hey guys," Georgia called out as they approached. "Benj has some news."
Lucy’s eyes lit up. "Spill!"
Benj stepped forward, looking a little sheepish but clearly excited. "We’ve been invited to a party. This Friday."
Amber raised an eyebrow. "Who’s throwing it?"
"Josh’s cousin," Benj replied, nodding towards Josh. "It’s supposed to be... well, kind of a big deal."
"Kind of?" Josh scoffed, shaking his head. "It’s the biggest deal. My cousin’s parties are legendary. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this."
Lucy clapped her hands together, practically bouncing with excitement. "This is going to be amazing! I’ve always wanted to go to a high school party."
Amber, however, didn’t seem as enthusiastic. She crossed her arms, her brow furrowing in thought. "And what exactly do we do at this party? Just show up and... what? Stand around?"
"Pretty much," Josh said with a shrug. "You just go, have a good time, meet some new people. It’s no big deal."
Georgia wasn’t so sure. She caught Amber’s eye and gave her a small nod, silently acknowledging her concerns. But there was no turning back now. The invitation had been extended, and they had accepted, whether they were ready or not.
"Alright," Georgia said, taking a deep breath. "We’re doing this. But we’ve got to be prepared."
Lucy grinned. "Oh, I’m so ready! What should we wear? Should we match? Do we need a theme?"
Benj chuckled, shaking his head. "I think we just need to show up and be ourselves."
"Right," Georgia agreed, though she wasn’t entirely sure who that was just yet. "But we’ve got a few days to figure it out. Let’s meet up after school tomorrow and plan this out. We’re not going in blind."
As the group dispersed, heading home with their minds full of possibilities, Georgia lingered behind for a moment, watching the sun dip lower in the sky. This was it. The first step into a new world, one filled with as much promise as it was with fear.
She glanced at Benj, who was still standing beside her, his expression a mix of anticipation and anxiety. "We’ve got this, right?"
He nodded, offering her a reassuring smile. "Yeah, we’ve got this."
But as they walked home together, the thought lingered in Georgia’s mind: what if they didn’t? What if everything went wrong? The party was just days away, and while it seemed like the entire school was counting down to it, all Georgia could think about was how unprepared she felt.
The clock was ticking, and whether they were ready or not, Friday night was coming fast.
