« Could you begin our strange love? »
The vibrant city of Tokyo was never as alive as during the summer. The warmest days of the year brought tourists from all over the world and with them came the effervescence of holiday attractions. While foreigners and people from the country-side visited the capital during the heated season, tokyoites travelled towards the closest leisure cities and the most affluent went abroad. The Shibuya neighbourhood was among the most visited places, with its luminous shops and coveted backgrounds for social media pictures.
Inside a living complex near the metro station of Shibuya, Hyori performed aerial yoga exercises inside her apartment. Afterwards, she commanded her domestic robot to clean around while she was taking a cool shower on Saturday morning. She was getting dressed when she heard her doorbell ring. The young woman hastily put on a white blouse on top of a black tweed skirt. She could tuck the top after answering at the door. She walked out of her bedroom and down the wall to reach the entrance of her apartment. Her loosely curled violet tresses bounced around her midsection with each step.
From the interphone, she saw a red-headed man waiting in front of the building entrance. His ice-blue eyes were looking expectantly at the interphone. His squared impressive stature was softened by an earthy-coloured vintage polo tucked underneath beige pants. After a few seconds of hesitation, she opened to the man who arrived at her door a minute later.
"Good morning, Enji." Greeted the young woman while letting him in.
"Good morning, Hyori." Greeted back the man whose expecting eyes took in every detail of her face.
Under his craving gaze that followed any of her movements, she passed the dining room to walk into the kitchen and retrieve a drink for the man.
"Would you have some flavoured water or do you prefer plain water? I have cherry and cassis flavoured water." Asked Hyori.
"Plain water, thank you." Answered the man.
She retrieved a glass and an empty bottle she filled with the fountain. The guest downed his glass in one go before putting it on the dining table.
"I guess you have been busy despite your studio holiday closure. How have you been doing?" Inquired the man.
"I've been doing well, thank you. I was working on other projects. And you? How is it going with your family?" Asked Hyori back.
"I haven't made much progress since last Christmas. Beside my daughter who had remained gracious to me, my youngest son is interning with me and we are on cordial terms. Working together has brought us closer. My second son isn't convinced yet and my eldest refuses to see me or his family. It's a complicated story but it turns out the child I thought was dead had been alive all along. He's now working for the Hero Commission and even entered the top ten. I suppose his anger is a fair punishment for not having faith in him. He's so much like me. Too much like me. I'm glad he's living his dream, though."
"And your wife? You were supposed to make amends to her." Pressed Hyori.
"I would rather not expand on the matter." Dodged the man before changing topics. "Are you free next Friday? I booked a restaurant with a nice view of the Toro Nagashi floating lanterns ceremony."
"I would rather not keep up whatever is going on." Replied Hyori, using the man's words.
"Why are you doing this?" Asked the thrown over man.
"I won't entertain a cheating husband." Said Hyori with finality.
As much as she hadn't been intimate in months and craved the touch, she stuck to her position.
