Chapter 14: The Council

As the Vatican slowly began to implement the reforms recommended by the independent commission, the global Catholic community found itself in a period of deep reflection and transition. The Church was changing, but the path ahead was still uncertain. The Order of Light, having played a pivotal role in exposing the corruption and abuses within the Church, knew that their work was far from finished.

To ensure that the reforms would be lasting and meaningful, a special council was convened—a council that would bring together not just clergy, but also laypeople, theologians, survivors of abuse, and representatives from various Catholic communities around the world. This council, unprecedented in its inclusivity, was tasked with shaping the future of the Church and addressing the many challenges it faced.

Father Dominic was invited to participate in the council, a testament to the impact the Order of Light had made. He knew that this was a critical opportunity to help guide the Church towards a new era of transparency, accountability, and compassion. Alongside him, Sister Maria, Brother Thomas, and Father Pietro were also asked to join, each bringing their unique expertise and perspectives to the table.

The council was held in Assisi, a city known for its connection to St. Francis, a figure revered for his humility, simplicity, and commitment to peace. The council sessions were structured to encourage open dialogue and collaboration. Each day, participants gathered in small groups to discuss specific issues, ranging from financial transparency to the protection of vulnerable populations, to the role of women in the Church. These discussions were then brought back to the larger assembly, where proposals were debated and refined.

Dominic found himself deeply engaged in these discussions. He was particularly focused on ensuring that the voices of survivors were heard and that their experiences were central to the reform process. He worked closely with survivors' representatives, advocating for stronger protections, independent investigations, and meaningful restitution.

In one of the sessions, Dominic was paired with Sister Maria and a group of laypeople from various countries. Their topic was the need for greater lay involvement in Church decision-making—a subject that had long been a point of contention.
