I take a deep breath in and Max either doesn't seem to notice or if he does he decides not to say anything. My mind is going about a hundred miles an hour as I try to figure out why Max suddenly smells extremely delicious. I mean he has always had a signature smell but now he all of sudden the smell is more than just his normal musk that I know so well. The smell that is coming off of Max is unlike anything I have ever smelt before. This new smell it is a mix of earth, rain and metal and I cannot get enough of it.
"Okay, so Max I don't want to freak you out or anything but you smell good, like really good, better than you should in the apocalypse" I hear the strain in my voice as I am trying to get the words out without moaning.
Max lifts my head from his shoulder and he turns to me. Max grabs my face and looks into my eyes and I see a blink of confusion pass through his gaze. He stands up and turns to me and goes to say something but is interrupted by a loud bang on the door.
"Hey Sarge! Are you in there or have you become a buffet?" a voice that I don't recognize calls through the heavy door but Max seems to know who it is as he lets out a small laugh and shakes his head.
"We will get back to your interesting issue in a minute here Trix, but until then let's get out of this place, and you into a much needed shower" I stick my tongue out at him and punch him in the arm.
Max opens the door and on the other side of the door is a man that I don't recognize. Max gives him a bear hug and tugs on my hand to bring me outside of the stairwell.
"Cooper I would like you to meet Trix or Trixie, the other half of the "we" Max pulls me forward wrapping his arm around my shoulders. I reach my hand out and the mans giant hand wraps around mine.
"Nice to meet you little lady. Nice to finally put a face to the name that we have heard a lot about over the last few years" Cooper states as he gives Max a sly smile.
"Oh really?" I give a little laugh, "I am hoping that everything you heard were only the good things" I turn to Max and see a blush rising to his cheeks and he lets out an awkward cough and Cooper smirks.
Cooper is probably the largest man that I have ever seen in my life. I am not sure what nationality Cooper is but the thick accent that he has lets me know that he is definitely from somewhere that isn't here. Cooper is probably in his mid to late 50's and he stands about six foot five or six and has shoulders that could put a mountain to shame. Even though he is a big, scary looking man I see a fatherly softness in his eyes especially when he looks between me and Max. Cooper nods his head towards the parking lot on the other side of the hospital from where we currently are.
"Alright kiddos, jeeps that way. Lets get a move on before the freaks start to realize you aren't hiding in the dark anymore. It is a bit of a walk to the jeep so keep your head up Sarge." Cooper & Max lift their guns up and keep a watch out for anything that could be hiding in the slowly fading light of dusk. As we make our way towards the parking lot I take comfort in the fact that Max makes sure to keep me within arms reach of him the whole way. Every now and then he reaches back and squeezes my hand, both to comfort me and I think himself as well.
We finally reach the lot and there are a few scattered cars throughout the lot and it takes me by surprise as it literally looks like the world just stopped functioning a couple years ago and I mean in a way I guess it did. We walk a bit further and a well equipped and well armored jeep comes into view and when we finally reach the jeep Cooper lays his hand on the hood.
"Well Trix, I would like you to meet Beatrice. She is my pride and joy." Cooper states smiling and opening the door for me to jump in.
"To be honest Trix, this jeep is probably the only thing that he puts more work and effort into other than his daughter's welfare" Max laughs crawling into the back of the jeep with me. Cooper makes a disgruntled noise but doesn't say anything just glares at Max through the rearview mirror. Cooper speeds out of the lot much faster than what would have been allowed before and I laugh to myself and smile as for the first time all day I truly feel 100% safe and happy.
