The rest of the night passed in a blur, the chatter and laughter of Sebastian’s family fading into a distant echo. I dodged Sebastian's worried gaze like it was a rogue tennis ball, and the judgemental stares of his family felt like daggers. Before I knew it, I was back in the car, the familiar scent of leather mixed with the faint aroma of his cologne enveloping me. I could feel Kai's ring burning a hole in my pocket, a reminder of everything I was trying to escape.
"Are you okay, darling?" Sebastian asked, his thumb rubbing gentle circles over my hand. I kept my eyes glued to the road ahead, as if the asphalt held the answers to all my questions. "Everything's fine," I managed to croak out, my voice barely above a whisper. Finally, I turned to look at him, and guilt washed over me as his pain-filled eyes locked onto mine, searching for reassurance. "Honestly, everything's fine; I think tonight was just a lot, really." I squeezed his hand, hoping to convey my sincerity.
"Oh good," he sighed, relief washing over his features. "I was really worried it was something I’d done. I really want this to work, Delilah; I think we’d be great together." His soft smile illuminated the dim car interior as we pulled up to my apartment.
An awkward silence settled between us, thick enough to cut with a knife, as the streetlights flickered outside. "Well, I should probably be going," I said, reaching for the door handle. But before I could open it, Sebastian's hand quickly tangled with mine, a gentle but firm grip that made my heart skip a beat.
“Maybe I could come in?” he asked tentatively, his voice laced with hope. “Just for a little bit? We could bond over our love of books or something else dorky,” he joked, a playful glint in his eyes.
I felt torn—part of me longed to invite him in, while another part needed solitude to unravel the mysteries that had unfolded by the fields. But the guilt gnawed at me, and as I stared into his earnest eyes, I found myself succumbing. "Would you like to come in, Seb?"
"I thought you’d never ask!" he exclaimed with a chuckle, bounding out of the car and rushing around to open my door. He took my hand as we walked to the front door, wrapping his arms around my shoulders and pulling me close. His warmth enveloped me, a much-needed comfort in the chaos swirling in my mind.
As we stepped into my cluttered apartment, embarrassment washed over me. My collection of G-strings lay scattered like confetti. Why didn’t I clean this up?!
“Oh god, I’m so sorry,” I stammered, hastily scooping them up and shoving them into drawers.
“Nothing to be embarrassed about, darling,” he murmured, a hint of amusement tinting his voice. “This is the best part of my night.” I turned to him, a blush creeping up my cheeks as he casually tossed four pairs back into my drawer. “Actually, I might keep these,” he said, pulling out a lacy black pair and slipping it into his pocket.
“Don’t even think about it, Seb!” I exclaimed, half-laughing, half-mortified. “They’re my favorite ones!”
“I’ll buy you a new pair, I promise,” he said with a wink, his playful tone easing my embarrassment. “Now, what are we watching?” He flopped down on my black leather couch, filling the space with his presence. The contrast of his large frame against my tiny apartment made me realize just how small my world felt.
I joined him, and as he draped an arm around my shoulders, I felt the urge to lean into his embrace. But the thoughts of Kai, those haunting voices, and the way Sebastian's parents had looked at me—like I was an unwelcome intruder—loomed in my mind, keeping me at arm's length.
As we sat there, choosing a movie, I glanced over at Sebastian, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Do you think we’ll actually find anyone who’s gone missing?” I asked, the weight of the question hanging in the air.
He looked at me, his brown eyes softening, and an expression of concern flitted across his face. “I honestly don’t know, but we'll do everything we can to try,” he said, his voice steady. Then, like a switch flipped, he brightened. “But first, we’re going to watch,” he paused for effect, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle at his enthusiasm. "Whatever floats your boat," I say with a chuckle, rolling my eyes playfully even though I secretly adore that movie. As we settle into the worn leather couch, he leans in, brushing his lips gently against mine. His warmth sends a shiver down my spine. "This is the start of something amazing, Delilah; I just know it," he says, his voice thick with emotion, like honey melting in sunlight.
"Maybe it is," I reply, feeling my heart race like a runaway train. The uncertainty is both thrilling and terrifying, a dizzying cocktail of feelings I can’t quite name.
Resting my head on his chest, I close my eyes. His heartbeat is steady, a comforting rhythm that lulls me, and before I know it, I drift into sleep, the movie forgotten.
Suddenly, I’m jolted awake, but instead of the cozy apartment, I'm in a twisted nightmare. I hear the sound of water dripping onto hard concrete, a chilling echo that sends a shudder through me. The air is thick with the metallic scent of blood and harsh chemicals. I squint into the dim light, trying to make sense of the shadows dancing around me.
In the corner of the room, I see a figure—vague and indistinct, like a half-forgotten dream. My heart pounds as I take a step forward, but I find myself pinned against the wall, immobile. "Who are you?" I choke out, my voice barely a whisper, like the last breath of a candle flickering in the dark. The figure remains still, slumped over in a metal chair, dark hair cascading over his face, obscuring his features.
"Please look at me!" I try to scream, but the sound is swallowed by an unseen void. All that escapes my lips are silent screams, echoes of despair reverberating in my chest.
Suddenly, loud noises erupt from my right. Figures burst into the room, frantic and panicked. "Stop him!" they scream in a chaotic chorus. "What is he doing? He's connecting to her!" My heart leaps as realization washes over me—this is about me.
I’m being grabbed, pulled at by unseen hands, my body thrashing against the rough hands that hold me. I struggle, fear clawing at my insides. "Let me go!" I want to shout, but the words dissolve into the air, leaving me powerless.
I wake with a start, heart racing, eyes wide open to the familiar dim light of my apartment. Sebastian's concerned face hovers above me, his brow furrowed.
"Hey, you okay? You were mumbling," he asks, his voice a soothing balm against the remnants of my nightmare.
"Did I say anything about... about Kai?" I manage to ask, still shaken.
He hesitates, searching my eyes. "Just a little. Something about chains, and... well, it sounded intense. Do you want to talk about it?"
I shake my head, a mix of relief and dread washing over me. "Not really. I just... I don’t want to think about him right now. This is our moment, right?"
"Absolutely," he grins, trying to lighten the mood. "Then how about we make this a nightmare free zone? Just us and the movie. I promise, no chains or dark torturous figures will make an appearance."
I laugh softly, the tension easing. "You might have just saved my sanity. But if I see a shadowy figure in the corner, I’m blaming you."
"Deal! And if anything tries to connect with you, I’ll wrestle it away like the brave knight I am," he winks, pulling me closer.
As the opening credits roll, I lean into him, hoping the warmth of his presence will chase away the remnants of fear. In this moment, I know that whatever happens, I’m grateful for this chance to start anew, even if Kai’s shadow still lingers in the corners of my mind.
