The days that followed the battle at the southern gate were a blur of chaos and preparation. Braden's forces had been driven back for now, but everyone knew it was only a matter of time before they returned, stronger than ever. The city was on edge, with soldiers and civilians alike working tirelessly to reinforce defenses, gather supplies, and prepare for the next assault. Lyra barely had a moment to catch her breath as she led the efforts from the command center, but her thoughts were never far from Kael.

Their complicated feelings for each other had reached a tipping point, and despite the constant demands of the war, the tension between them had only grown. Every shared glance, every unspoken word, seemed to hang heavy in the air between them, charged with emotions neither of them knew how to handle.

Lyra tried to focus on the task at hand, but the weight of her feelings for Kael was becoming impossible to ignore. She had always prided herself on her ability to remain focused and composed, no matter the situation, but Kael had a way of breaking through her defenses in a way that no one else ever had.

And now, with the city teetering on the brink of destruction, Lyra found herself torn between her duty and her heart.

As the sun began to set on another exhausting day, Lyra made her way to the city walls, seeking a moment of solitude. She needed time to think, to clear her head, to figure out what she was going to do about Kael. But as she reached the top of the wall, she found that she wasn’t alone.

Kael stood there, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the enemy camp lay hidden in the distance. He turned when he heard her approach, his expression unreadable.

"Couldn’t sleep?" he asked, his voice quiet.

Lyra shook her head, coming to stand beside him. "No. Too much on my mind."

Kael nodded, though he didn’t say anything more. For a long moment, they stood in silence, side by side, watching as the last light of the day faded into darkness. The tension between them was palpable, the weight of their unspoken feelings pressing down on them both.

Finally, Lyra couldn’t take it anymore.

"We can’t keep doing this, Kael," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kael turned to her, his brow furrowed. "Doing what?"

"This," Lyra gestured between them, her frustration evident. "Pretending like nothing’s changed. Like we don’t feel anything for each other."

Kael’s expression softened, and for a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something, but he hesitated. "Lyra…"

"I can’t keep pretending, Kael," Lyra said, her voice cracking slightly. "Every time we go into battle, every time I see you throw yourself into danger, I can’t help but think about what would happen if I lost you. I know we’re in the middle of a war, and this is the worst possible time for any of this, but I can’t stop how I feel."

Kael was silent for a moment, his eyes searching hers. "I’ve been trying to fight it too," he admitted quietly. "But I’m not sure I can anymore. Every time I see you, every time we fight together, it gets harder to keep my distance."

Lyra felt her heart skip a beat at his words, but before she could say anything, Kael continued.

"But we have to be careful, Lyra," he said, his voice laced with concern. "If we let our feelings get in the way, it could cost us everything. The city, the war… each other. We can’t afford any distractions right now."

Lyra knew he was right. The war had to come first. But it didn’t make it any easier to push her feelings aside.

"I don’t want to be a distraction," she said softly. "But I also don’t want to lose you."
