One year later...
A giant poster hung on every notice board in the Garrison. An enormous crowd of students was gathered around it, the noise of excited chatter filling the study room. Lucy and Keith glanced up from their table, sharing an identical scowl of annoyance. "Why does everyone have to make so much noise?" Lucy sighed, her brow furrowed as she tried to focus on finishing her science homework.
Keith shrugged beside her and straightened in his seat to try and catch a glimpse of what everyone was so excited about. "Oh, its the poster for the positions" he said.
"Ah" Lucy hummed, finally understanding the fuss.
The final team positions for the simulation flight crews were being assigned today. Lucy and Keith had already checked theirs early that morning to check theirs. As usual, they were in the same team, with Keith the pilot and Lucy the fighter pilot. She had been promoted from co-pilot a few months ago, "when Iverson realised you were too good to take a backseat" in Shiro's words. Lucy strongly suspected Shiro had had something to do with it. She also suspected he was the reason why she and Keith were constantly on the same team as well, which wasn't a bad thing. It was nice to know she had an ally she could rely on.
The cargo pilot on their team was Lance McLain and the engineer was Hunk Garret, if Lucy wasn't mistaken. She hadn't met either of them yet and Keith hadn't recognised their names. "What's the answer to question three?" Keith asked hopelessly, trying to look at Lucy's work.
Lucy freely showed him the blank page. "Come on, Keith, you know I'm useless" she joked.
"Got that right!" a voice sniggered, but Lucy simply held up the peace symbol until she heard someone swear at her.
Keith's fist clenched around his pen. Lucy quickly began packing up her things with the excuse that she couldn't concentrate with such a racket going on. Really, she didn't want Keith to get into another fight. He was still as unpredictable as ever but Lucy knew him well enough to recognise the danger signs.
The corridor was thankfully much calmer. Everyone was too busy fighting to see the posters in the common rooms and study rooms to focus on getting to class on time. "Wonder what our team will be like" Lucy mused as they walked.
"Same as usual" Keith replied.
"A complete failure?".
"Not with me on your team!" a loud voice called from behind them. The two turned to see a very tall slim boy walking towards them with a smug smirk. He had tanned sun bathed skin and messy brown hair that complimented it perfectly. His eyes were a shocking dark blue, like the deepest oceans. He walked with a confidence rarely seen in a cadet, almost strutting. A tall thick set boy trailed shyly behind him. He was the complete opposite of the boy who had called out. An air of shyness surrounded him, contradicted only by his kind smile. He had slightly overgrown black hair, tied back by an orange bandana, which Lucy was surprised hadn't been confiscated by Iverson.
"Who are you?" Keith asked suspiciously.
"I'm your new cargo pilot, Lance McLain" the loud confident one introduced proudly. He winked at Lucy and bowed down to kiss her hand. "But you can call me Injured cause I just fell for you".
Lucy's cheeks burned. Something rose in her throat. She promptly burst out laughing. She tried so hard not to but she just couldn't stop herself, even though she knew it was rude. "Aw! I think I'm going to like you" she chuckled, wiping a tear from her eye.
"Wow. I can't believe someone actually appreciates your pick-up lines, Lance" the chubby boy behind a grinning Lance teased.
"Everyone loves my pick-up lines, Hunk" Lance retorted. He winked at Lucy again. "Especially pretty ladies with great taste". Lucy rolled her eyes, grinning.
