Six months later...
Lucy ran through the Garrison towards the commanders' offices, grinning like an idiot. She didn't even care about the students who tried to trip her up on the way. They didn't succeed anyway, as she jumped right over their outstretched legs. In her hand she clenched something she had wanted all her life. She skidded round a corner, nearly flattening some first years who had clearly lost their way (only a mental person would intentionally enter the dreads commanders' block). By the time she reached the door to Shiro's office, she was so out of breath she could barely breathe. The door was open and she was about to burst in, when she heard voices from inside. She didn't want to intrude, so she politely waited in the corridor outside.
"The Kerberos mission needs someone like you" an older sounding voice was saying "Someone with your piloting skills could half the time it takes to reach the moon".
Shiro's awkward bashful laugh sounded. "I doubt it" he replied humbly.
"Don't be modest!" a young female voice exclaimed "I've seen your record. You're the best pilot in the Garrison! You have to go on this mission! Dad and Matt will be lost without you!".
"Katie" the older voice warned.
"Come on, Dad, you know you have no sense of direction. I once drew him a map to the fridge from the living room and he got lost on the stairs-".
"That's enough, Katie. Why don't you wait outside?" the older voice suggested firmly.
"But Dad!" the girl began to protest.
Lucy guessed "Dad" must have given her one of those very firm unquestionable looks that only parents could do. Footsteps sounded and then Lucy found herself with company. The girl looked a little younger than her by perhaps three or so years. She had long chestnut hair wrestled into a side pony tail and bright inquisitive eyes of the exact same colour. Lucy gave a quick smile and tucked her precious object into her pocket. She wanted Shiro to be the first person to see it.
"Hi" she greeted.
"Hey" the girl replied after a moment. She quickly pulled a device out of her pocket, sat on the floor and began tinkering with it, ignoring Lucy's presence completely. Lucy didn't mind. She would have done the same thing at her age.
The conversation inside the office lasted only a few minutes longer. The door opened and a middle aged man dressed in the grey commander's uniform stepped out. He wore glasses but his eyes were the same shade of brown as the girl's.
Shiro followed him. "I'll think about it, sir" he said.
"Please do, Shiro" the man said warmly with a smile "I'd hate to go on the mission without you".
Then the pair noticed Lucy stood there.
"Oh, hi, Kana" Shiro greeted "Have you been waiting long?".
"Not really" Lucy replied "Um... Shiro, can I talk to you? Please?". She was struggling to resist bouncing on the balls of her feet she was so excited!
"Sure" Shiro nodded, but then he gestured to the man beside him. "Kana, this is Commander Holt, the leader of the Kerberos mission, and his daughter, Katie".
The girl didn't look up from her machine.
"Nice to meet you" Lucy said politely, wishing they would leave.
Shiro curled his arm around Lucy's shoulders and proudly pulled her into his side, completely catching her off guard. Her face burned with her blush, tucked beneath Shiro's arm. What on earth was he doing?!
"Sam, this is Cadet Lucy Kana, the best fighter pilot I've ever seen".
"He's lying" Lucy told the commander, but he only laughed.
