When I arrived at my friend's house, everyone was busy. "Aunty, I'm here!" I said. "Hey Lex!" Jay replied. "What brings you here?" I asked. "Spending summer with my aunt," Jay said. Then Kel's mom came out and said, "Alex, you're here! Help Teka with the dishes." I nodded and went to the kitchen. "You're here, Teka!" I said. "Yeah, wash and I'll rinse," she replied. After finishing, I went outside and helped the others. When we finished, I sat under a big almond tree, feeling chill.

"Let's go to the river?" Kel asked. "Why not?" Jay replied. I was a bit scared because I can't swim and the water's deep. "But Mommy won't let me, remind Teka," I said. "But Mommy would let we," Teka said. "Why don't we tell her we're going to catch water?" I suggested. "Yeah, let's do that!" Jay agreed. We asked Aunty, "Can we go catch water?" Jay asked. "Yes, but don't go in the water," Kel's mom said. "Okay, Mommy," Kel said. Then we gathered the bottles and headed to the river.

After coughing up de water, I held on to Jay, still trying to catch my breath. "Yo okay, Alex?" Jay asked, looking worried. But before I could answer, Kel jumped in, "Why yo throw her ina de water, man? Yo know she can't swim!" I reassured them, "I'm good," and let go of Jay. I started moving around ina de water, trying to ease de tension, yo. As we swam and played ina de water, we lost track of time, mon.

Then I came outta de water and sat on de grass, watching Jay move through de water with ease, like a fish, yo. Him look up and catch my eye, flashing a sweet smile, and I couldn't help but smile back, 'cause him just have dat kind of vibe.

Him say, "Yuh like wah yuh see?" I reply, "Mi no know, maybe I want see more." Him laugh and say, "A dat yuh a look fi?" I laugh and look at him, surprised to find him already staring at me. "Why yuh a look at me like dat?" I ask, blushing. "Like wah?" him reply. I feel a shiver down me spine and joke, "Like yuh want to eat mi or something!" Him burst out laugh and say, "Bad man, no inna di eating business, baby girl!" I smirk and reply, "So yuh a bad man now?" Him say, "Yeah, now yuh notice."

Just as I was about to respond, Kel interrupted, looking at us in disbelief. Kel say, "Hello! Mi here too! Unu should get a room!" Matt a fack! Nuh see di time? A get late. Let's go home before Mommy come with di guava stick, ya ear?" Kel then tell Jay, "Stay away from mi friend!" And with a sarcastic tone, Kel say, "Unu look at each other like a mannequin compilation

We reached home and Kel's Mommy was fuming! She and her husband were arguing, and she turned to us, her voice raised. "How long mi send yo guys fi get water? Look pan di time yo come back! Yo think yo can just take yo sweet time?"

"Go change and eat yo dinner, and don't think about wasting any more of my time!" she snapped. As we caught our breath in the living room, Kel and I exchanged a nervous glance and burst out laughing. Teka, Kel's sister, looked at us like we were crazy. "Did yo guys have fun?" she asked. "No, I almost died," I replied, still shaking.

Jay suggested changing first, and I said, "Why yo first?" He said, "Yo and Kel can just change in the room." I was a bit angry, but what he said was right, so I walked to the room, and Kel followed along with my bag and her clothes that she took out while I was busy cussing Jay. We locked the door and started to change while we talked.

"Yo like him?" Kel asked me, a sly grin spreading across her face.

"Who?" I replied, confused.

"The guy with the hammer that live down the road," she said sarcastically.

"What, who the hell is that?" I asked, still confused.

"Kahjay, dummy! Yo like him," she said in a serious tone.

"Oh no, a yo cousin," I replied, realization dawning on me.

"Yah, and yo a mi friend, so stay away," Kel said, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Why, so yo can get him?" I teased, raising an eyebrow.

"Eww, no!" Kel exclaimed, scrunching up her face in distaste.

"A joke, girl!" I laughed, chuckling at my own joke.

We finished changing and headed to di kitchen for dinner.

As we ate and watched TV, I felt happy for some reason. Was it because Kel's parents were just like mine? No, that wasn't it. Was it di food? No, I'd eaten better before. Was it being with my bestie? Kel was always close to my heart. Or was it sitting next to Kahjay, feeling his warmth, watching him smile? I pushed di thought aside, telling myself, "Stop it, girl! Don't be a lovesick puppy!" I rolled my eyes and focused on my food, trying to ignore di butterflies in my tummy whenever Kahjay looked my way.

Later that night, I got a notification on my phone. I checked and it was Jay texting me.

Jay: Guess wah?
Me: Wah?
Jay: When me push yuh inna di water, mi hand accidentally touch yuh breast

I turned around and looked at Kel, then back at my phone, wondering why Jay was telling me this.

Me: Why yo a tell mi dis?
Jay: It was soft
Me: Wah yo expect?
Jay: Dat's not wah me mean
Jay: Wah yuh do in yuh free time?
Me: Me read manga
Jay: Wah's dat?
Me: Romantic comics, yuh know?
Jay: Dat's so childish
Me: Read nerd, project and tell mi dat again
Jay: Okay, mi will

I looked at him and smirked, then turned around, put my phone down, and closed my eyes. What was this feeling? It wasn't love... it was happiness... peace. This was what I always wanted to feel. It was like when it was my birthday and my grandma visited... I felt like I could die happy.

In that moment ,our hearts beat once, but it beat together.
