Abby's POV
The chamber was dimly lit, the flickering torchlight casting long, jagged shadows that danced on the stone walls. A heavy tension filled the air, suffocating and thick, like a storm waiting to break. Lance stepped forward, positioning himself between me and Malachi, his broad shoulders taut with resolve. His sword gleamed menacingly in the low light, the sharp edge reflecting his unwavering determination. "You're too late," Lance snarled, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Hax is dead, and so is your plan."
Malachi stood at the far end of the room, a tall, imposing figure cloaked in darkness. His presence was like a shroud, chilling and omnipresent. He tilted his head slightly, a slow, sinister smile creeping across his face. "Oh, Lance," he drawled, his tone laced with mockery and a chilling familiarity. "You always were my favorite student. But you've made a grave mistake."
The air crackled with an eerie energy as Malachi raised his hand, fingers outstretched, a faint, otherworldly glow emanating from his fingertips. The glow pulsated, bathing the room in an unnatural light that sent shivers down my spine. Lance tensed, his grip on his sword tightening, muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. But before he could act, Malachi spoke again, his voice dripping with venom.
"Abby, darling," Malachi said, turning his gaze to me, his eyes gleaming with a twisted amusement. "Did he tell you about the blood bond? About how Lance isn't just protecting you out of loyalty, but because he's bound to you? Body, mind, and soul? He took a blood exchange oath to your father, hoping to keep you away from me."
The revelation hit me like a punch to the gut, and the room seemed to tilt, the walls spinning around me. My mind struggled to process the words, the implications. I looked at Lance, searching his face for any sign of denial, but his expression had darkened, his jaw clenched tight, a flicker of guilt flashing across his eyes.
"What?" I gasped, my voice barely more than a whisper, my heart slamming against my ribs. "Is it true?"
Lance's silence was answer enough, and the weight of the truth crashed over me like a wave, cold and suffocating. Malachi's laughter filled the room, a mocking, hollow sound that sent a chill down my spine. It was as if the very walls were laughing with him, echoing my helplessness. I felt trapped, ensnared in a web of lies spun by the people I had trusted most. I was never free. Not from Hax. Not from Malachi. And now, not even from Lance?
Lance's grip tightened around his sword, his knuckles turning white, veins bulging with the strain of holding back everything he wanted to unleash. "Focus, Abby," he said through gritted teeth, his eyes never leaving Malachi. "Hax was obsessed with you, Abby. Malachi knew it, and he used it against us. Against you."
A knot formed in my throat, the taste of betrayal bitter on my tongue. I could feel the anger rising, a simmering rage threatening to boil over. "You still should have told me," I said, my voice cracking under the weight of the unspoken truths between us. "I had a right to know."
Lance's face softened for a moment, a flicker of regret flashing in his eyes, but the steely resolve returned almost instantly. "I was trying to protect you," he said, the words laced with frustration. "Hax was dangerous, and I couldn't risk you getting hurt. I didn't know how far she'd go until I saw her with you just now."
I took a step back, my legs shaky but determined grasping the boom with white knuckles. The room felt smaller, the walls closing in as every revelation piled on top of the last. "What else are you keeping from me, Lance? I can't keep playing this game blindfolded."
