The early morning light bathed the small town of Cirencester in a gentle glow as Aurelia awoke in her cozy room. The curtains fluttered softly with the breeze, and the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the house. Aurelia stretched languidly and sighed, feeling a warm sense of contentment as she prepared for another day.
She slipped out of bed and padded quietly to the bathroom. The rhythmic sound of running water filled the room as she washed her face and brushed her blonde hair. Her reflection in the mirror seemed familiar and reassuring—a reflection that had been hers for as long as she could remember. As she finished, she dressed in her usual school uniform, a simple but neat outfit that made her feel ready for the day.
Downstairs, the kitchen was a picture of domestic tranquility. Margaret Harrison, her mother, bustled around the kitchen, setting the table for breakfast. Her cheerful humming filled the room, blending with the sound of the coffee maker and the sizzle of bacon in the pan.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Margaret greeted Aurelia with a warm smile as she placed a plate of toast and jam on the table.
"Morning, Mum," Aurelia replied, her face lighting up with a genuine smile as she took her seat. The familiar breakfast routine was a comforting start to her day.
Her father, Edward Harrison, entered the kitchen, carrying the morning newspaper. He ruffled Aurelia's hair affectionately as he sat down at the table. "Anything interesting in the news today, Dad?"
Edward chuckled, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. "Not much, just the usual. But there's something on the doorstep that might be of interest to you."
Aurelia's curiosity was piqued. "Oh? What is it?"
Margaret glanced at Edward, then turned back to Aurelia with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. "It's a letter addressed to you. I think it's from your... school."
Aurelia's heart skipped a beat. She had been eagerly awaiting news from the local school she'd applied to, but her parents' cautious tone suggested that the letter might be more significant. She reached for the envelope, noting the ornate seal and elegant script. The deep green wax seal bore a symbol she didn't recognize. Her fingers trembled slightly as she peeled it open.
Inside was a beautifully written letter:
Dear Miss Aurelia Potter,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You will find enclosed a list of required books and equipment, as well as the date of your first term. We look forward to welcoming you to Hogwarts and to your magical education.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
Aurelia's eyes widened as she read the letter. "Potter? But—"
Margaret's expression turned serious. "Aurelia, there's something important we need to tell you."
She took Aurelia's hands gently in hers. "We have something we've been keeping from you, and we need you to understand why. When we found out about you being left behind in Godric's Hollow, we were overjoyed to adopt you. We had been struggling with infertility for years and couldn't have children of our own. When we found you, we saw you as a blessing, a miracle given to us."
Aurelia's eyes widened further. "You mean... you adopted me?"
"Yes," Edward confirmed, his voice steady but filled with tenderness. "You were found in Godric's Hollow, and we were thrilled to have the chance to bring you into our family."
Aurelia's mind raced. "But why didn't you tell me before? Why keep it a secret?"
Margaret's eyes were filled with sadness. "We wanted to protect you from the sadness of knowing you were adopted. We thought it was best for you to have a normal, happy life without that burden. We also wanted to let you know about your adoption when you were older, not to overwhelm you with everything all at once."
Edward reached out, his voice gentle. "We didn't know how to tell you before. We wanted you to be mature enough to understand and cope with it. We didn't want to confuse you or make you feel different. We lied about the reason for your blonde hair, saying it came from a gene from a great-grandfather, to avoid revealing the truth about your origins prematurely."
Margaret squeezed Aurelia's hands, her expression earnest. "We love you dearly, and we wanted to shield you from the negative emotions that comes with knowing you're adopted, and now we will also try to help you adapt to your magical heritage."
Aurelia sat in stunned silence, her emotions surging as she tried to make sense of everything. "This is all so much to take in. I thought my whole life was one thing, and now it's completely different. What am I supposed to do with this new information?"
Edward's gaze was warm and sincere. "We're here for you, Aurelia. We know this is a lot to process, and we want to support you through this transition. You're still the same wonderful person we've always loved, no matter where you came from."
Margaret nodded, her voice soothing. "You have a wonderful opportunity ahead of you. Hogwarts is a magical place, and it's a part of who you are. We're proud of you and will stand by you every step of the way."
Aurelia took a deep breath, her eyes shifting to the letter in her hand. "So, Hogwarts is real? And I'm... a witch?"
Edward nodded. "Yes, it's all real. We didn't know about this world until recently. A few days ago, a man named Severus Snape, who is a teacher at Hogwarts, came to visit us. He explained everything about your origins and the magical world. We were overwhelmed and didn't know how to handle it."
Margaret continued, "Snape told us that you were born to the Potters and that they sacrificed themselves to protect you from a dark wizard named Voldemort. He also explained some strange things that had happened with you over the years that we couldn't quite understand, like when you made the TV switch channels on its own or made flowers bloom out of season. Those were signs of your magical abilities."
Aurelia's eyes widened even further as she absorbed this new information. "The Potters? That's my family?"
"Yes," Margaret said softly. "And there's something more. Snape also mentioned that your older brother is Harry Potter. We didn't know who he was or what he had done until Snape explained it to us. We're sorry we didn't tell you sooner."
Aurelia's mind raced, trying to process the revelation. "Harry Potter? I... I don't know who that is. But my brother? I have a brother I didn't even know about?"
Edward placed a comforting hand on Aurelia's shoulder. "We understand this is a lot to take in. Harry Potter is well-known in the magical world, but we didn't want to overwhelm you with all this information at once. We'll help you learn more about him and the world you're now a part of."
Aurelia took another deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions inside her. "I feel like my whole life has been turned upside down. I'm excited about Hogwarts and what's to come, but I'm also scared and confused."
Margaret nodded understandingly. "It's natural to feel that way. We're here to help you adjust and to be there for you as you start this new chapter. You're not alone in this."
As Aurelia looked at the letter again, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirled in her heart. The world she had known was shifting, revealing a hidden reality that she was only beginning to understand. Hogwarts awaited her, and with it, the promise of discovering more about her true self—and her newfound family.
The warmth of her adoptive parents' love surrounded her, even as the shadows of her past began to emerge. Aurelia knew that this new journey would be both thrilling and daunting, but with the Harrisons by her side, she felt ready to face whatever lay ahead.
