Aurelia woke early on her first day at Hogwarts, a mix of excitement and nerves bubbling within her. The Slytherin dormitory, with its dark green curtains and silvery accents, felt like a strange new world compared to the warm comfort of her home in Cirencester. Despite the chilly atmosphere, there was something comforting about being here, as if the house itself whispered that she belonged.
She dressed quickly in her Slytherin robes, her hands brushing through her blonde hair as she studied herself in the mirror. The Potter name carried weight, and although she still didn't understand the intricacies of it all, today would be the day she started carving out her own path. Today would be the day she finally met her brother, Harry Potter, whom she had heard so much about but had yet to properly meet.
As she made her way to the Great Hall, she was joined by Nora Prince, who was walking with her head held high, prideful as ever.
"First day of classes," Nora remarked, her voice filled with confidence. "I've been waiting for this forever. I'm going to make my family proud."
Aurelia smiled but couldn't shake her own nervousness. The Great Hall was just as impressive as the night before, the ceiling charmed to mirror the morning sky, with floating candles providing a warm glow over the students. She sat at the Slytherin table, scanning the other tables in the hopes of spotting her brother. She knew he was here—Harry Potter, her supposed older brother, whose reputation already preceded him at Hogwarts.
As the hall filled, Aurelia overheard students whispering about Harry. One girl, seated at the Gryffindor table, leaned toward her friend.
"Do you think he'll find trouble this year too? After last year's...you know, incident with You-Know-Who," she murmured.
Aurelia's curiosity grew with every word. Why hadn't anyone mentioned more about Harry yesterday? She had been hoping to learn more about him, yet they always had kept the conversation mostly focused on their own excitement about Hogwarts.
Pushing her disappointment aside, she ate quickly, keeping an ear open for any more mentions of Harry. Her mind was abuzz with thoughts of what it would be like to finally meet him. But for now, her first class of the day awaited.
Her first class was Potions in the dungeons, and as she entered the cold, dimly lit room, Aurelia couldn't help but feel a twinge of nervousness. The air felt heavy with anticipation as students found their seats. At the front of the room stood Professor Severus Snape, his black robes billowing slightly as he moved with the precision of a bat. His piercing gaze scanned the room, lingering a moment longer on Aurelia before continuing.
"Potions," Snape began in a low, silky voice, "is not a subject for fools or glory-seekers. It is a delicate art—one that requires discipline, focus, and above all, an understanding of the subtleties of magic."
Aurelia listened intently, already having read the entire potions textbook over the summer. Her adoptive parents had tried to help her understand magic as much as they could, but nothing could have prepared her for this—the real Hogwarts experience.
As the lesson progressed, Snape gave the students a simple potion to brew. Aurelia worked with precision, her movements confident as she followed the instructions perfectly. Snape, who had been making his rounds, stopped by her desk, his dark eyes narrowing.
"Miss Potter," he said slowly, "you seem...competent."
There was a pause, and for a moment, Aurelia thought she saw a flicker of something in his expression—was it approval?
"Thank you, Professor," she said, hoping not to sound overly eager.
Snape lingered a moment longer, his gaze softening just slightly. "Let's hope you keep that up."
