Jane was so tired and stressed out that during classes the next day she had a hard time paying attention. Being tired seemed to really elevate her troubles. She was able to get her work done, but if anything else happened outside of that she had no idea what it was.
During potions they went over a new recipe that they would be working on for the next few weeks- the Draught of Peace. They would prepare themselves by learning about the potion, studying each key ingredient, preparing each item, and then making it. It would take them a few weeks, which Jane was glad for, but at the same time it was one more thing she needed to do.
She had tunnel vision the whole class, moving like a robot as she took notes (again quills- the worst. Why couldn't ball point pens be invented earlier). Apparently the Draught of Peace often comes up on Ordinary Wizarding Level, which was something she thought she had heard before but her brain wasn't working. When class was over she packed up and headed out, her mind clouded with the homework that she was going to have to complete before the next period. (author note: if you know the HP reference you get bonus points)
Normally she would have walked with one of her friends, but she didn't even think of a single one of them- not even Ominis! She hadn't talked to any of them yet today, honestly she hadn't even seen them if they were there. She trudged towards the Green House, her mind so heavy. Even though there was still ten minutes before the class started she went right to her station and got to work.
Leander had given her a few of his old textbooks from the plant class and she had looked through them before they had parted. There were so many things she needed to know from previous years that, of course, were not in the game- although thankfully some were. Before bed it hadn't bothered her that much, but the long list of plants had been one of the things that kept her up last night.
She pulled out the first year textbook that was lent to her and quickly skimmed through the pages. In the game the Herbology teacher did have you go over some of the things that were taught in the first year like the chomping cabbage and venomous tentacula. She decided to start with that today- at least she already had the seeds for them.
Her face was deep into the book when everyone else filed in, she was still trying to figure out all she needed to grow the scary plants. When she heard Garlick's voice she quickly shut it and turned her attention to the front- she couldn't fall back in 5th year learning while she tried to catch up.
Her hands and clothes were caked in soil by the time class was dismissed. She wiped her forehead, adding a smear of brown there as well. Today they were working again with Mandrakes- thankfully not the full things like what was shown in the game. They were just working with the seeds to plant their own, but in a few weeks they would practice the repotting that she had played in the game.
She kept working, making sure the little seed would have all it needed to grow. She moved over to grab her notes and cursed under her breath as she covered her words with more dirt. She dropped it down and quickly tried to brush her hands on her cloak, but found that it made an even bigger mess than she had. She wanted to scream out in frustration, but the words caught in her throat as a wind blew around her catching her off guard.
She turned to see Garlick finishing up the scourgify charm, cleaning up the large mess she had made. The friendly professor looked down at her, eyes full of sympathy and it almost tipped Jane over the edge into tears- but she held it in.
"I'm glad to see you are working hard dear, but you know you have all year to catch up."
Jane nodded, looking down at her now clean hands. She felt a comforting pat on her shoulder, and looked up to see the teacher walking away. Still a big flustered she gathered up her pages and threw them into her bag- choosing to keep the textbook out though.
