Sophie  1;30 pm Tuesday
" Princess, your meal..."  My maid, Sally, set my meal down on my desk. I look out the window that it is worth possibly millions. From the arch's golden frame to the glass that is unbreakable.  "m'lady what are you looking at ?"  she asked. Hold my glass cup of tea.
"My kingdom. It's gone to hell."  I put my cup down and turned on the record player, mozart. The volume is low but loud enough to hear both me and the music.
"I'd like to be alone "  Alec and my maid start to leave. I turn and look at them. "No! Alec, stay for tea. "   He looks back at the door he was just about to walk through then he walks to sit in a fancy Queen Anne chair.

"I don't want to marry you. " I say to him while walking away from the window.
" but the prophet-"  his eyes widened. I don't blame him, most princesses don't act as I do but none of us are flawless.
" I know about the prophecy, do you think we were meant to be? "  He rested his hands on his knees. "I don't believe in fate and I don't want to marry you as well but there is no other way to keep the peace. " I put my hands on the couch.
"There is always another way."

In the garden, we sat in the gazebo.
I look around and see all the flowers my mother planted.
" Sophie, did I ever tell you that me and your mother got married here?"
I look at him. " No, you haven't."
He puts a box on the glass table. "I wanted to give you something and tell you something. " I open the box and I see 10 rings, 2 bracelets with chains connecting the rings to the bracelet. A set of jewelry. "What is it?"
" Those rings show that you have authority. I'm giving them to you because I will soon no longer not be king."
"What do you mean by that?" I looked at him and I noticed his hair turning gray. I asked him while putting on the bracelet. It fits.
"I made a peace treaty with the king of Arbel, you're getting married to Alec."
I stood up. "What?!" " I think you heard me".
"First You tore us apart as kids now you want us married for what? Peace? You know that won't last as long. You guys hate each other. I haven't seen him in years. Do you think it's worth it? "
"One small life to save a thousand other lives? Absolutely. You have all the time in the world to get to know him, my dear. " he stands up and holds my face in his hands. I swatted his hand. " I won't marry him!"
"You don't have a choice. The fate of the kingdom depends on you and the People look up to us. They expect us to be perfect and I have expected the same from you your whole life. perfection."

Wednesdays, the day before the ball

I could hear my heartbeat. We are in the drawing room of one of my kingdom's mansions. I watch the disk spin and listen to it. I pick up my teacup and stand near the window. Alec standing nearby.
"Alec, why are you covering your ears?"
I asked, looking at him.
"Can you turn off the music? My ears are sensitive."
I lift the stylus, "I wanted to ask you something." He removes his hands from his ears. "What is it?" I look into his eyes and my heart pounds on my ribcage.
"I was wondering if you would like to escort me to the annual ball of Philesta. The moon looks nice every year." what he wears makes him stand out. Cufflinks and ties. I remember when his mother had to force him to wear ties.
" Why do you ask?" he hovered over me. "This is another chance to get to know you. I haven't spoken to you in a while."
" I would be happy to take you, this would be my first time going. "

His first time? Now, I am even more nervous.
I smile at him And I look at the watch on my arm.
"It's getting late." I showed him my watch. "You're right and I am a long while from home." we dashed to the door, my hand gripping the doorknob. I open the door and we see a maid fall onto the floor. She stands up fast and blushes. She bows 90 degrees. "Miss, I am so sorry if I can only do something to make it up to you," she says in a high-pitched voice.

"You're only sorry you got caught. Look me in the eyes when you apologize."
She slowly lifts her head. I look at the sewed name tag.
"Rily, you're a bit young to be working so I will have you working in the women's guest quarters," I smirked.
"But that's almost no work!"
she looked shocked, and her eyes widened.

"Don't worry you will still get paid the same amount as long as you don't cause trouble for me."
She nodded and she stepped out of the way. I walked through the door and down the hall then Alec ran up to me with a surprised face.
"What was that?!" I turned to him.
"What was what?"
"That!" He pointed to where me and the maid were.
"That was not the kind, timid, girl I knew."
"People change." I shrugged

"People don't change, they hide or grow."
"I could have done worse."
"So could I but you are giving her one of the worst jobs!"
"And I will pay her the same amount! Please don't defend her for spying, it's a crime. She is blessed that she spied on me and not someone else."
He put his head down and didn't say anything.
I continue walking to my room. " your right." I heard him whisper.
