The castle loomed over the village, its towering spires and darkened windows casting long shadows on the land below. Inside its ancient stone walls, the grandeur was undeniable—a place of elegance, history, and mystery. I, a mere maid in this vast fortress, often found myself lost in its many corridors. But among all the rooms, there was one where I felt most at home: the library. The Dimitrescu family was known far and wide for their elegance, their beauty, and, of course, their power. Lady Alcina Dimitrescu was the matriarch, an imposing figure with a voice that could silence a room. Her daughters—Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela—were equally formidable, each with her own unique charm and lethal tendencies. But among the three, it was Daniela with whom I had formed a special bond. My duties in the castle were simple—clean, serve, and stay out of trouble. But the moment I set foot in the library, I felt a pull that I couldn't resist. The room was massive, with walls lined from floor to ceiling with books of all kinds. The smell of aged paper, the creak of the wooden floorboards, and the dim, golden light from the chandeliers above created an atmosphere that was nothing short of magical. It was here that I first met Daniela. One evening, after finishing my duties, I wandered into the library, unable to resist the call of its endless shelves. I was drawn to a section I hadn't explored before, filled with old tomes that looked like they hadn't been touched in centuries. As I reached for a particularly worn book, I heard a soft voice behind me.
"You've got good taste."
I nearly dropped the book in surprise. Turning around, I found Daniela standing a few feet away, her fiery red hair cascading over her shoulders. Her eyes, a striking amber, were fixed on the book in my hands. I had seen her before, of course, but always from a distance. Up close, she was even more striking—her beauty almost otherworldly.
"I'm sorry, Miss Daniela,"
I stammered, bowing my head.
"I didn't mean to intrude."
She laughed softly, a sound that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Intrude? You're welcome here anytime. I've seen you in here before, you know."
"You have?"
"Of course. You think I don't notice what happens in my own home?"
There was a playful glint in her eyes, and I found myself relaxing a little.
"I didn't think you'd care about a maid like me,"
I admitted, feeling a bit more emboldened. Daniela tilted her head, considering me.
"You're not just a maid. You're someone who loves books as much as I do."
And that was how our friendship began. Over the following weeks, we spent countless hours in the library together. Daniela was different from her sisters. While Bela was the eldest and most responsible, and Cassandra the most brutal, Daniela had a softer side—one that she rarely showed to others. With me, she was open, almost vulnerable. We talked about everything—our favourite books, the history of the castle, the world beyond its walls. Sometimes, she would read aloud to me, her voice filling the room with life as she brought the stories to life. One night, as the wind howled outside and the rain battered against the windows, we found ourselves alone in the library once more. Daniela had selected a book of poetry, a thick volume with gold-leafed pages and an intricate cover. We settled by the fireplace, the warmth of the flames casting flickering shadows on the walls.
"Do you ever wish you could leave?"
Daniela asked suddenly, her eyes fixed on the fire.
"Leave?"
I echoed, surprised by the question.
"You mean, the castle?"
She nodded.
