Ginny was indeed in the next room over, attending to a patient. Her movements were professional, and her bedside manner warm and comforting. But in the back of her mind, she wondered what her father and Alexis were talking about. House, noticing Alexis falling back into a restless sleep, decided to step out of the room for a moment. He hobbled out, closing the door quietly behind him.
Ginny immediately looked up as he stepped into the hallway, concern evident in her eyes. "How is she?" she asked in a whisper. "Sleeping," House replied, his voice gruff. "Her vitals are stable. She's doing better."
Ginny nodded, relief washing over her. Seeing her father show concern for Alexis was new, and she couldn't help but wonder what had caused this sudden shift in his behavior. House looked at Ginny, his eyes studying her face. He could see the questions behind her eyes, but he didn't offer to explain. Instead, he leaned on his cane and grumbled, "If you're done here, we should get you home."Ginny nodded, understanding that House wouldn't provide any explanations. She quickly finished up her tasks and joined him in the hallway.
As they walked to the exit, House grumbled under his breath about the incompetence of the hospital administrators, but his eyes kept flickering towards Ginny, silently noting her worried expression. Once they were in the car and on their way home, House finally broke the silence.
"That girl, your friend," he began, his voice gruff. "Alexis. She said something interesting."Ginny's eyes widened with surprise, and she turned to her father eagerly. "What did she say?" she asked, her heart pounding in anticipation. House kept his eyes focused on the road, but Ginny could feel the tension in the car. Finally, he grunted, "She said you're lucky to have a father like me."
Ginny's eyes widened even further. She had never expected her friend to say something like that, especially not to her father. Her heart swelled with emotion, but she managed to keep her voice steady.
"Did she say anything else?" Ginny asked, her curiosity piqued. House grunted in response, a flicker of emotion passing over his face. "She said she didn't know who her father was," he said, his voice laced with a hint of compassion. "But that her stepfather was a good man."
Ginny's eyes softened, her heart aching for her friend's troubled past. She had never known the full story of Alexis's family, but hearing it now made her understand her friend's resilience even more. House glanced at Ginny, his eyes sharp with insight. "She's been through a lot," he observed. "But she's stronger than she lets on. Just like you."
Ginny looked down, taken aback by her father's words. It was rare for him to offer compliments or acknowledge anyone's strength. But she knew that his recognition meant something, coming from him.
