***Jessica POV***

"Have a good summer, Ms. Todd! See you next year!" The last students yelled as they ran to catch the bus.

"Have a great summer!" I yelled after them.

I finished the last of my packing, locked the classroom door, and began walking toward my car with a wagon of items in tow behind me. I was thrilled that the school year had come to an end. I made Teacher of the Year and even hosted a couple of parenting events.

As I finished packing my car, my phone buzzed in my purse on the seat. I answered it.

"Jess, where are you?" my mom's voice said through the phone.

"Just getting ready to leave the school, Mom. I will be there soon. Do you need anything?" I asked her.

"No, darling, we don't need anything. Your father is ready to go. You know how he gets," she said with a laugh.

"Okay, see you soon," I said, hanging up and starting the car to go home.

I am the only child of a librarian and a forensic scientist. My parents were high school sweethearts, went to college together, and got married. My mom miscarried twice before she had me and didn't have any more children after me.

My mom is a beautiful 53-year-old, brown-skinned, petite woman with high cheekbones.

My dad and she met in freshman year of high school. They didn't start dating until junior year. My dad said it was love at first sight, but he was too shy to say anything. My mom is outspoken, and if she sees something she wants, she goes for it.

My dad is a man of few words. My mom says he has gotten better at communicating. He has a lighter complexion than my mom I get lighter share from him.My dad who grew up in New Orleans with eight siblings; he was the youngest.

They will be gone for three weeks. Their first stop is the American Academy of Forensic Sciences convention. We used to go every year, but I've aged out and would rather not spend my summer that way.

I am a homebody—the snuggle-on-the-couch type with a good book or movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy traveling, but I also love my me-time so much more. That's what I need after a busy year—time to clear my head and relax.

I made it to my parents' house, parking my car in the empty spot next to my dad's. My mom's car must be in the garage. As I approached the house, my dad was already moving luggage into the car.

"Hello!" I said to him with a wave.

"Hey, baby girl," he said, walking up to me with a hug.

"Your mom is in the kitchen making snacks. Tell her to come on; I'm trying to beat one of my buddies and his wife," he said with a smile.

I laughed, shook my head, and walked into the house, shouting a hello to my mother in the kitchen.

"Hello, baby!" she shouted back.

Coco and Jazz, my feline siblings, meowed at me. I cooed, and they began to purr at my feet.

I walked into the kitchen to see my mom putting some items inside the cooler on the floor. I told her what Dad said about trying to beat one of his friends.

She rolled her eyes and mumbled something about it not being her fault they were running behind, then closed the cooler.

"Jacob, the cooler is ready to go!" she yelled to my dad, who was coming back into the house.

My dad came in, grabbed the cooler off the floor, and took it to the car.

My mom passed me a list of things that needed to be done within the next three weeks. I took it and slipped it into my pocket.
