"IT”S another fucking normal, boring day. Probably, I'll be facing my laptop all day again. I'll go home to sleep, then wake up tomorrow to face my laptop all day once more.
For the last five years, it has always been an obnoxious cycle for me.
I nonchalantly heaved a sigh...
Rustan and his messed-up life. I smirked. Afterward, I furrowed my brow as I reached for the mug next to my laptop. I took a sip. When I tasted the familiar bitterness of coffee, it felt like something soothing washed over me. This is the only thing I hold onto to make my mood okay every day. Fact accepted.
I started typing on my laptop again. After a moment, I grabbed the mug once more, ready to savor the coffee one more time. But at the exact second I was about to sip it, Fino's voice echoed from outside my office. I accidentally spewed coffee onto the laptop screen.
"Boss!" he yelled as if he were about to be murdered.
He opened the door, and as he entered, I threw my laptop at him. I fixed a sharp gaze on him. Little shit.
"What was that for?!" This moron was lucky he dodged it.
"Is there a fucking need to yell?" My jaw clenched. "Can't you just come in and calmly say whatever you ought to say like normal people do?"
"Boss, this shit is not something to be calm about!" He started panicking again. I clenched my teeth to keep myself from hurling the lampshade next to me at him. Suddenly, his face brightened. He smiled broadly at me. "I found her!"
I blinked.
What?
"I found Lara, boss!" He approached me and shook me by the shoulders.
That's when I stood up involuntarily. I grabbed him by the collar. "Don't you fucking shit on me."
I said firmly.
He tried to force me back, but he couldn't overpower me. "It's Lara that we are talking about, you fucking kidding me?!"
"I'm serious! I really know where Lara is!" he continued squealing.
I took a deep breath. Slowly, I eased up my grip on him until he pushed me away slightly. "I am telling you the truth. Lara lives on an island far from here," Fino looked me straight in the eyes, "Isla Victorina. She is currently the owner of a souvenir shop there. She was spotted by one of my men."
He took out his cell phone and then showed it to me. And there, I saw a picture of a lady busy sitting at the cashier's area.
It's Lara...
My wife...
At that specific moment, my mind was crowded with thoughts. I didn't know where to begin.
I couldn't think of a beginning.
All I knew in those moments was that I wanted to see Lara.
"Call Denver," I mumbled, suddenly speaking up, "tell him to prepare the helicopter. We have to go to Isla Victorina as soon as possible..."
AFTER Fino called Denver, we immediately headed to the nearest building from the restaurant. We waited on its rooftop for the helicopter.
And him, being Denver, it seemed like only a few minutes passed before he reached us.
I didn't wait for another moment; I walked towards the helicopter. But I stopped when I felt Fino's hand on my back.
"We're even now, bro—uh, boss. Keep your promise. I don't owe you anything anymore."
Ever since I started looking for Lara, I had been using him as leverage to find her. Since he was the one responsible for pushing the woman I love away from me, he should be the one to find her. Or else, he'll fucking rot together with his debt.
But honestly, in the end, I realized, like Lara, he was also trapped in my stupidity. I knew it was difficult to swallow the abuse he inflicted on the woman I love, but I kept returning to the idea that I was the one responsible for everything.
Every time I got angry at this bastard, I grew even angrier at myself.
I glanced at him. I just nodded in response before turning away. But I stopped again when he tapped me on the shoulder.
"Treat her right this time," he said.
I didn't say anything more. I walked away from him. I took a step closer to the helicopter... closer to the one who would lead me to the woman who completed my shattered life.
IT was probably nine o'clock in the morning when we arrived at the green fields of Isla Victorina. This was my first time setting foot in this province. And I must say, just by looking at its perfectly shaped mountains, this was a hidden paradise.
"Shall I wait for you here, or should I come back for you, Sir?" Denver asked as the helicopter's engine finally stopped.
"Just come back for me once I tell you to," I answered, earning only a nod from him.
I disembarked from the helicopter with nothing in hand. I was alone, armed only with my hopes and excitement to see my Lara again.
I continued walking as the helicopter's sound faded into the distance. I strolled along with the fresh air in the middle of the majestic cornfields. Every now and then, I was greeted with smiles from the farmers I passed by. They were all friendly. It's no longer surprising that this is what Lara chose as her refuge against me.
After a while, I had already crossed the green field. The dirt road led me to what seemed like a small commercial area. Here, there were small shops, and a few restaurants.
I glanced around, searching for Lara's shop. And when I heard a commotion not far away, I turned my attention there. A young girl emerged from the door of that shop, laughing heartily as she made her way out.
When I looked up at the sign above the shop, it was as if everything had stopped for me. Everything around me slowed down. Everything became blurred in my vision. The only thing that was clear at that specific moment was the name of that shop...
Lara's Memento Shop.
That's when my feet seemed to have a mind of their own. I found myself making my way toward that shop. And as I got closer, I saw who was inside through the glass door.
It's her...
It's really her...
I didn't wait another moment; I opened the door. The sound of the bell above the door chimed as Lara's eyes met mine. They suddenly widened.
"At last..." I grinned widely. "At last, I finally found you..."
I approached her, slowly. I was still processing the reality. Because if this were just a dream, I wouldn't mind being in a coma just to continue this surreal moment.
She stood up. I kept on smiling. She was still the same Lara I knew. Simple. No makeup. But her hair was a bit shorter now, and she had gained a little weight. Nevertheless, she was still unbelievably hot as fuck.
"What are you doing here—"
I cut her off, "I want my wife back."
She let out an irritated deep breath. Then, she shot me a sharp look. "Go back to the hell you came from because there's no place here for a demon like you." Her voice was sharp. That was the moment when I truly noticed the difference between the new her and the old her.
She was feisty now.
The old, naive, fragile, and pushover Lara was gone.
I winced in my head. It seemed like my journey on this island won’t be easy...
