The remainder of their time was spent dancing, relaxing, cuddling, and, of course, sharing many kisses. When they returned to the UK, they resumed their usual routine of focused studying, with Shivi pouring her heart and soul into her academics, and Josh equally dedicated to maintaining his straight-A record just as he did in Harvard.
Their ability to balance their love life and studies was the envy of their entire college. While others struggled to excel in one area, they managed to excel in both. They were like magnets, poles opposite, yet irresistibly drawn to each other, working together, and staying together.
As their first-year final exams approached, both gave their best efforts. Finally, the exams were over, and they had a month of freedom ahead. They had booked their tickets to return home months in advance, even before Josh's birthday celebration, where their journey had begun.
They celebrated the completion of their exams in a restaurant. Josh was savoring his steak while Shivi opted for a salad, being a pure vegetarian while he was a devout non-vegetarian. She gazed at him as he enjoyed his meal and smiled, saying, "There is not one single thing in common between us, yet I don't know why I am crazily in love with you." She said with affection and bewilderment.
Josh flashed a warm smile and said, "There's nothing common about us, but I know why I love you so ardently."
Shivi leaned forward, her excitement evident, and rested her elbows on the table. She quizzed, "Let me guess... because I'm not materialistic?"
Josh shook his head, his affectionate smile never wavering. Shivi's enthusiasm was contagious.
"I make good paneer biryani?"
Josh chuckled and teased, "In that case, I should be in love with any Indian MasterChef, like Vikas Khanna."
Determined to find the answer, she tried again, "Is it my curvy Indian figure?"
Josh playfully rolled his eyes and replied with sarcasm, "Oh yes, the one I've never had sex with until now. That's the perfect reason."
With their meal finished, Josh got up and began to walk, Shivi skipping along beside him, curiosity still piqued.
Shivi continued her interrogation, "Is it because I'm frugal? Or because I'm Indian? Do I come with a free lifetime photographer? What else, damn it?"
Josh stopped in his tracks, turned toward her and inhaled audibly. He gently ran his hand through her hair, tucking it behind her ear, and said softly, "Shivi, your eyes. I fell for them the day I met you."
Shivi's heart raced as he touched her, and she closed her eyes briefly, blushing. She then pushed him playfully and retorted, "Very funny. You have the most beautiful ocean-green eyes I've ever seen, and you like my plain brown ones."
Josh held Shivi's hands, his gaze locked onto hers, and he kissed her hands tenderly. "Everything you just mentioned a few minutes ago is the perks I'm getting because I chose you. But none of that brought me here. Your mesmerizing eyes...I fell for those.... I really can't explain it, Shivi. There's something about them."
Unable to believe that he is drawn to her normal brown eyes she countered, "There's nothing special about them; they're just plain brown eyes."
Josh took her hands and placed them around his neck, drew her into an embrace. "I don't know, Shivi. I can't explain it. Your eyes give me a sense of nostalgia. I can't go a day without looking into them."
