Four years later,

CRYSTAL

School uniform. Check. High ponytail. Check. Eye mascara and lip gloss. Check, check. Today was my first day of school. I was in my final year in high school. I was so excited.

I flung my black school bag over my shoulder as I looked at my appearance in the mirror once more. My blue and back pleated skirt had been perfectly ironed, thanks to Margaret.

I adjusted my short sleeved white shirt one last time as I walked out of my room and headed straight for the kitchen where I knew Margaret would be.

“Good morning sweetheart. I was just about to come get you” she said as she packed my lunch for me.

I placed a soft kiss on her cheek as I grabbed my lunch from her hands. “Thanks Maggie. You're the best”.

She smiled and I looked at her with eyes filled with love. I had spent four years here and Margaret had never for once treated me like I didn't belong here.

I shook my head as I refused to think of the past. My awful past. I was heading out of the kitchen when Margaret stopped me.

“Heyy, you haven't had breakfast yet”. She yelled and I shook my head. “I'm already late, besides no one takes breakfast these days”.

“I also need to lose some weight”, I mumbled as I looked at the little fold my stomach was beginning to have. It wasn't obvious but it was there.

I grabbed an apple and munched on it. “See you later” I called out and I was gone before she could utter another word of disapproval.

I rushed out of the house just in time to see my uncle getting into the car. Even after four years, he still looked great with his jet black hair perfectly styled like always.

I quickly got into the car before they decided to leave me behind. I usually rode with them three times in a week and today was one of those days I rode with them to school.

Judging from the way uncle's lips were pressed into a firm line I knew he wasn't happy with me.

“Good morning Miguel” I greeted our sweet driver. We had become friends over the years. We talked a lot when uncle wasn't around but way less when he was present because uncle didn't like it or so I thought.

The partition was put in place before Miguel could reply and I turned to look at uncle. He looked at his phone nonchalantly as he typed away.

“Okay fine. I'm sorry I woke up late and kept you waiting”. I mumbled but he ignored me.

Even after four years, I still hadn't understood this man one bit. I had a feeling he had different personalities.

An idea popped into my head and I smiled slyly. I had developed a new trick over the years and it seemed to work every time.

I leaned over the small distance separating us as I placed a small kiss on his cheek. “I'm sorry I woke up late. So please can you remove the partition, I really want to talk to Miguel”.

He stilled for a minute before turning back to press the phone. I decided to go full on.

“Wow, did you get a new haircut? You look amazing. Also is this a new suit? It suits you really well” I complimented as I ran my hands on his arm feeling the fabric.

I looked up at him and gave him my brightest smile. He finally looked at me and I could see his lips tugged up slowly in a smile before he masked it up.

I laughed inwardly. Sweet-talking worked all the time with uncle and I had used it to get myself out of difficult situations.

“Don't keep me waiting next time” he warned and I nodded eagerly. He reached forward and pulled a plastic container from a bag on the floor before placing it in the space between us.

“Breakfast” he said and my eyes widened in delight and surprise. “You're really the best uncle”. I cooed as I snatched the container and removed the lid. It was toast with bacon and eggs.

I sighed in contentment and wasted no time in digging into the food.

‘Who said no one ate breakfast these days? Not me’. I loved food. My slightly chubby face and curvy figure were proof of the sumptuous meals I had eaten over the years. ‘What did a girl need a flat stomach for anyway?’.

The partition was removed and I gave him a grateful smile as I leaned forward with bread in my hands and turned to Miguel.

“So, how's Clara and Jean doing?”I asked. “I've missed them so much”. I muttered sadly and he laughed.

Miguel's twin daughters were absolute angels. They were three years old and they had filled my life with sweetness.

"They are great. They spent the holiday at their grandparents house" . He then proceeded to tell me the new trick the girls had learnt over the holiday and how mischievous they had become.

I laughed heartily till happy tears trickled down my cheeks. “I'll bring them during the weekend so you can see how mischievous they have become”.

“I'd like that very much” I replied  as I leaned back into my seat to finish my breakfast. I couldn't wait to see the twins. They were the definition of fun.

I glanced towards my uncle and his face looked gloomy. ‘What happened now?’ I replayed the discussion I had with Miguel in my head. I hadn't said anything offensive about him.

Unable to find any plausible reason as to why he looked gloomy, I gave up and looked outside. It was certain. I could never understand the man.

Thankfully, we arrived at my school and I wasted no time in getting off. “Goodbye Miguel. Thanking you for taking me to school” I bowed to show my appreciation. It was something I had done over the years.

These people had shown me love and had accepted me into the family like I was one of them.

I looked at my uncle and watched him staring at me with a scowl on his face. I gave him a small smile and scurried off quickly. I didn't want to be caught in his wrath.

“Crystal”! A voice belonging to my best friend Bella Morgan screamed loudly and I turned around only to be enveloped in a bone crushing hug.

“Girl, I've missed you so much. I thought the summer wasn't going to end”. She whined as she popped a bubblegum into her mouth.

Bella had always been outgoing and funny unlike me who was reserved and boring.

But somehow we had clicked right on the first day of school and we were both in the same majors.

“Girl, you look amazing. Look at that chubby ass there” she said as she winked at me causing me to blush. “Stop it Bella” I muttered shyly. I really had to start working out.

She shook her head and wrapped her hand around my shoulders before ushering me towards the direction of the school just as other students were scurrying in.

She blabbered about the guy she dated over the summer and how she broke up with him because he tried to hook up with another girl for a threesome and I listened half heartedly.

I couldn't help but think about my uncle and his gloomy face as I came down from the car.

What a strange man!
