The air was crisp with the sweet scent of cinnamon and caramel apples at U.A. High School's annual Fall Festival. Colorful lights danced around the grounds, illuminating the laughter of students enjoying games and activities. For Hanta Sero, the festival held a special excitement; it was the perfect backdrop to spend time with Shoto Todoroki, the boy who had stolen his heart.
As they wandered through stalls filled with handmade crafts and delicious treats, Sero felt a warmth blooming between them, one that transcended friendship. He chuckled as Todoroki expertly related to the fortune teller, the cryptic old woman giving him a knowing glance that made Sero wonder just how much she saw.
"Hey, do you think she was right?" Sero teased, nudging Todoroki lightly with his elbow. "Maybe she can tell us what the future holds for us."
Todoroki raised an eyebrow, but a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "You know I don't believe in that."
As the day faded into evening, they enjoyed a hayride, the sounds of nature around them followed by the faint echo of laughter in the distance. Sero could hardly take his eyes off Todoroki, the way the soft light of the festival illuminated his features made Sero's heart race.
But after a delightful day of joy, it was clear that something was off. Todoroki had mentioned feeling a bit off while they were enjoying their pumpkin spice lattes—something that Sero brushed off as a consequence of the festive atmosphere.
Over the next couple of days, Todoroki managed to rally through the aftermath of the festival, hiding any signs of discomfort. Sero noted his boyfriend's paler complexion and occasional winces, yet every time he expressed concern, Todoroki would brush it aside with his signature stoicism.
"I'm fine, Sero," he would insist, but the strain in his voice said otherwise.
On the third day, however, after lunch, Sero's playful demeanor was interrupted when he caught Todoroki rushing to the bathroom. Concern knitted his brows together as he followed, only to find his boyfriend bent over the toilet, emptying his stomach.
"Shoto!" Sero's heart raced as he knelt next to him, holding back hair and rubbing soothing circles on his back.
Todoroki glanced back at him, pale and sweaty. "I— I think I just ate too much at the festival," he managed to say, swallowing hard as if attempting to convince himself as much as Sero.
But Sero wasn't buying it. He noticed the way Todoroki's hands trembled, the way he was holding back with sheer determination, and it made Sero's heart ache. "Seriously, we should get you checked out."
"No," Todoroki replied firmly, leaning against the wall and taking a shaky breath. "I'm okay. Just...give me a moment."
Sero believed him, though a gnawing unease settled in his gut as he left Todoroki for some fresh air. He didn't want to overreact, but the nagging worry didn't relent.
That night, the stars twinkled brightly, and Sero snuggled up, ready to settle in for a peaceful night. But his rest was interrupted by the sound of muffled cries coming from the other side of the bed.
He jolted awake, heart racing, and turned to see Todoroki sitting up, his back pressed against the headboard, knees drawn tightly to his chest. The moonlight illuminated the sheen of tears glistening on his face, making Sero's heart sink.
"Shoto?" Sero's voice was soft as he reached toward him, the concern in his tone evident as his fingers brushed against Todoroki's arm. "What's wrong?"
The way Todoroki tightened his grip on his knees, the way his chest heaved – it broke Sero's heart. Without needing a response, Sero gently pulled him into his arms, cradling him as he began to sob.
"I'm sorry, I thought I could handle it," Todoroki choked out, his voice muffled against Sero's shoulder. "I thought it was nothing..."
"Hey, it's okay," Sero whispered, rubbing his boyfriend's back in slow, soothing motions. "You don't have to be strong all the time. I'm here. Just let it out."
Todoroki melted into Sero's embrace, his tears soaking the fabric of his shirt. "I feel awful. I just wanted to enjoy the festival with you, but I... I didn't want to ruin anything."
"I'll take caring for you over any festival any day," Sero replied, his voice steady and reassuring. "You're more important to me than any celebration."
Todoroki finally looked up, eyes red but softening, finding solace in the warmth of Sero's gaze. They shared a moment of understanding, each finding comfort in the other's presence amidst the turmoil.
"Thank you, Sero," Todoroki whispered, emotion thick in his voice.
"Always," Sero vowed, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. "Let's get you feeling better."
As the night wore on, they settled back into bed, Sero holding Todoroki close. This wasn't what Sero had envisioned for their festival adventure, but he knew that as turbulent as things might be, they would face it together. Love was not just about sharing joyous moments—it was about being there for each other in sickness and in health, and he wouldn't have it any other way.
As the leaves rustled against the window, carrying the whispers of autumn, Sero felt the weight of his boyfriend's emotions easing. They were intertwined, in more ways than one, ready to face whatever lay ahead hand in hand. For when the seasons changed, so too would their love, growing deeper and stronger, however many storms they had to weather together.
