The sound of laughter filled your apartment as you, Robert, Mike, and Hope gathered around the living room for your regular catching up. It had been a while since the four of you hung out like this, and the easygoing energy was a welcome distraction from the complicated nature of your relationship with Robert.
You sat on the couch, careful to keep the distance between you and Robert as agreed. Hope and Mike were sitting across from you, completely oblivious to the tension crackling beneath the surface-at least Mike. Robert was relaxed, casually leaning back in his chair with an amused smile on his face as Mike went on and on about a wild story from their precinct.
"And this is why Mike can't stick to a regular partner. No one can handle him for more than a few months, and then I have to keep reassigning him new victims" Robert joked, making everyone laugh but maybe you a little bit more than the others.
"It's not my fault that everyone in there either is stupid or can't take a joke" Mike shrugged with a playful grin.
"If by joke you mean poor or too unhinged pranks, then sure, everyone else has to be the problem" Robert teased him again.
"Hey, we were perfect together. Then you had to go ahead and get the promotion and leave me with those idiots" Mike raised his arms in the air.
"So now I'm the problem?" Robert laughed and leaned back, taking a sip from his glass of wine.
"No, that's not what I'm saying. But, it all will be history in a few months that I'm putting this sh*tty thing behind" he lifted his beer.
"You're promoted?" Hope asked with excitement.
"Yessir. I'm next in line once Anderson retires his old a*s" Mike laughed.
"Congratulations, Mike!" you all were happy for him.
"The streets are going to miss you" you said before you all clinked your glasses in joy.
As the night continued, Robert seemed to be as free and comfortable as he could get. He made tons of jokes and lit up the atmosphere continuously. You forced yourself to focus, to stay engaged in the conversation and of course not show how much he really made you want to laugh out loud, but every now and then, your eyes would drift to him, and you'd catch him looking at you too with a more than friendly smile.
There was an unspoken understanding between you, a quiet thrill that had been simmering ever since you'd agreed on your little "red code". Tonight was supposed to be strictly friendly. No sneaking around, no stolen moments. But the longer you were in the same room together, the harder it became to ignore the pull.
Eventually, you excused yourself to the kitchen, under the concept of grabbing more drinks. The second you stepped into the quiet, cool space, you let out a breath you hadn't realized you'd been holding. A smile that filled your face up followed, along with a slight blush on your cheeks just by thinking of the situation.
You were reaching for the fridge when you heard soft footsteps behind you. A shiver ran down your spine as Robert slipped into the kitchen, closing the door halfway behind him. He leaned against the counter, arms folded, a knowing smirk forming on his lips.
"I thought we agreed—strictly friendly tonight" he said, his voice low enough so it wouldn't carry to the others.
"We did" you replied, but there was a teasing edge to your tone that betrayed you.
Robert stepped closer, his hand brushing lightly against your back as he moved past you to grab a beer.
"You're terrible at following rules" he teased, though his voice was warm, playful.
You turned, facing him fully now, the distance between you growing smaller and smaller.
"I'm not the only one bending them" you raised your eyebrows.
Robert chuckled softly, leaning in just enough for his breath to graze your cheek. The familiar warmth of his presence ignited something inside you, the secret thrill you felt every time you were close to him.
"If you wanted to flirt, you should've remembered our little code" you said quietly, your eyes flicking to the door to make sure no one could overhear.
Robert's smirk widened as he set his beer down and tugged at the waistband of his jeans. For a split second, your breath caught in your throat as he pulled down the edge of his jeans just enough to reveal the bright red fabric of his boxers.
"Red enough for you?" he asked, his voice laced with amusement and his face decorated with the most playful and sneaky grin you've ever seen on him.
"You're ridiculous" you bit back a laugh, covering your mouth with your hand as you shook your head.
"I'm just living up to the code" he replied, his eyes shining with mischief.
For a moment, you just stood there, caught in the charged silence between you. You could hear Mike and Hope still talking in the living room, completely unaware of the growing tension in the kitchen. But here, it felt like you and Robert were in your own little world, the rules you'd set for the evening slowly slipping away.
His hand found your waist, pulling you just a little closer, his fingers brushing lightly against your skin. It wasn't much, but it was enough to make your pulse quicken.
"Strictly friendly, huh?" he whispered, his lips dangerously close to yours now.
You swallowed, your mind racing. You were dangerously close to crossing the line, but you couldn't bring yourself to pull away. Instead, you leaned in, your lips brushing his for just a second before you forced yourself to take a step back, your heart pounding.
"Robert... we have to be careful" you whispered, glancing at the door again.
"I know" he replied, his voice softer now, more serious. "But you make it really hard to be good"
You couldn't help but smile at that, shaking your head as you grabbed the drinks you'd originally come into the kitchen for.
"We should get back out there before Mike gets suspicious" you gulped.
"We will. But after we do what we really came here to do" he smirked.
Before you knew it, you were trapped between him and the counter behind you. His body was pressing into yours with lust, you could feel it on his heartbeat or even on the way he kissed you. Numerous of fast, sneaky kisses followed repeatedly, you were finding it hard to pull apart.
Something about his strong arms pulling you as close to him as you could possibly get was turning you on more than you could even imagine. It felt like unfolding a whole new chapter of him, a more lustful side that likes to play with fire.
Unfortunately or not, the sound of your body hitting the beer bottles behind you and making them fall and make noise made you abruptly pull apart from one another. If anyone stepped in at this moment, they would see you safely standing far from each other, but they would also see the slight red color on your cheeks and notice your heavy breaths.
"Okay, okay, I'm going" Robert sighed dramatically and raised his arms before you got to say anything, but there was a playful glint in his eyes as he walked away.
With a final, flirty look, he left and headed back into the living room, leaving you behind trying to steady your breathing before you rejoined the group. You did exactly that a few moments later, casually handing Hope a beer like nothing had happened. But she definitely knew, it was written all over the quick playful look she gave you.
As the night went on, you and Robert continued to play your parts, keeping up the friendly act. But sometimes inevitably, you'd catch his eye, and he'd flash you that sweet smile. Whenever he stretched, just a hint of red was peeking out from under his jeans—a reminder of the game you were both secretly playing.
And as much as you tried to resist, you couldn't help but look forward to the moment when you'd be alone again, and you could finally stop pretending.
