Surfing was like second nature to the pogues, to JJ. So when John B ran past him in the chateau yelling "the waves are mad, cmon!" He didn't hesitate. Maybe he should've?
Sarah trailed behind the two boys, not intrested in the surfing but rather sticking close to John B since the rest of the gang were in an intense game of uno. So instead she held onto the back of his board, giving him a tight smile when he glanced back her way. Though it was hard to see now that the sun had started to set.
"Do you really think that's safe?" Sarah's voice broke between the boys banter as they threw off their t-shirts. Giant navy waves shot over one another, each threatening a new danger with the sky that had turned dark. "Yeah, wanna come?" Her boyfriend replied, high-fiving JJ before the blonde headed towards the water. A sideways smile pulled on her boys lips, his eyes wavering on the girls crossed arms. "Just be careful." She said, answering the question she knew he was going to ask. "Yes ma'am." He chuckled, grabbing his board and running after his friend who had just met with the water.
Complete darkness filled the island as the time reached 10pm, stars began freckling the sky. "John b!" Sarah yelled, failing to make her voice travel far enough. She shook her head, squinting to look for the bleach hair that is usually visible even beyond the waves. "JJ!" This time her voice adapted a squeakish screech, fear bubbling over. "We are here." A voice panted, the wind blowing over the rest of what he was saying. "John b?" She wondered how many more times she'd have to say his name before she could see him, he couldn't be further than a few metres but the darkness erased all silhouettes.
Eventually she saw his tall figure, hands reaching out for her. With no hesitation she ran into them, her warm hands meeting with the cool touch of his back. "Where's your board?" Everything had began clicking into the place now her adrenaline receded. "Lost it in the waves, it's mental out there." His breath was heavy against her cheek, panting with exhaustion. "Where's JJ?" John B pulled away from her, his head frantically moving behind him to where the sea roared. "He must still be in there, I thought he followed me out." His feet carried him before his mind could, speeding up as he stormed across the sand. This time Sarah didn't follow, she ran ahead yelling across the shore. "Stay away from the water." John B warned before launching his body into the icy sea.
By the time she heard footsteps coming towards her she had counted 5 minutes. 5 whole minutes with no word, no sound other than the waves and the wind, and no sight of the boys she loved ever so much. She didn't yell his name, scared of what reply she'd receive. But before she could even think about what to say, he spoke first. "He isn't breathing, he isn't breathing!" The words stumbled out his mouth like a gasp, drawing Sarah to the sound of whatever else he was muttering. "Fuck." John B cursed as he pumped at the other boys chest, watching as Sarah grabbed whatever board John B had managed to retrieve. "Do it on this, compressions are useless on a soft surface. "How the fuck do you know that?" His tone was harsh, eyes focused on his hands against JJ's lifeless body. The girl ignored him, instead pushing JJ onto the board and moving to his side.
Silence, the next minute was utterly silent. Then a wet cough broke through followed by John B swearing relief. "Cough it out, Jay." Not like the boy had a choice, hacking out water faster than he could take a breath. "Can you go get Pope?" Her boyfriend asked, watching as she registered the sentence. When she did, she ran off to the chateau at full speed.
Sarah breathed in before furiously letting out, "Kie!" Not Pope's name. Repeatedly shouting breathlessly until three figures stormed out of the shack. "What the 'ell is going on, I was about to win." Cleo's voice overtook her own, furrowed eyebrows staring back at herself. "JJ." She breathed out, unable to finish her sentence. It didn't seem to matter though because Kiara had already started sprinting towards their surf spot.
The others waited for her to finish, Cleo stepping closer. "He collapsed, the waves were too rough. Stopped breathing, now he won't stop coughing." Pope reached into his pocket, pulling out keys and chucking them towards Cleo. "Grab some water and the first aid kit and meet us there?" Sarah stood defeated still trying to catch her breath. "Sarah will show you the way, I'll chase after Kie." The other girl scoffed, letting out a laugh. "You'll never be able to catch her!" But she hurried inside to find the stuff anyway, looking behind to make sure Sarah was okay.
Kiara made it in less than 4 minutes, only realising that she wasn't wearing shoes when the road turned to sand. "John B!" She screamed, eyes wide and flickering around her. No reply, instead the sound of hacking. She followed it, eventually reaching the two boys collapsed on the sand. "Jayj." She mumbled, staring at John B for answers. He shrugged tirelessly, putting a hand behind the blonde boys back. "Help me get him sat up, I don't want him to choke." Curls blew around in the wind as she nodded.
"You okay?" Her voice soothed, crouching down and pulling his chest up. "Shit, he's freezing." Kiara whispered to John B as bare chested JJ continued to cough. "Are you okay?" She repeated, this time aiming the question at John B who had sunk into the sand next to his best friends. "Yeah, just worried and exhausted." Her lips crept into a reassuring smile, reaching out her left arm to pull him into her shoulder. The other boy sat between her legs, her right arm rubbing his back in small circles, John B's head crooked so he could watch his breathing. Though there wasn't much of that going on, coughing had overtaken it so much his face started to turn a freakish blue.
