Cláudia

I sat on my bed looking down at the small white envelope that was now resting on my lap. The white and yellow letters highlighted by the purple colours of The University of Manchester imprinted on the corner of it, my name on the left side in black bold letters reassuring everyone the letter was indeed addressed to me.

I sighed. Thirty minutes have passed since my mother handed me the small envelope that was more powerful than it seemed. I couldn’t find the courage to open it, I wanted to know what was written there but at the same time I didn’t. Never in my entire life had I thought that such a simple and small thing like an envelope would affect my life so much.

Inside of it was the answer that would decide my entire future, if I was going to be a fashion student of The University of Manchester or not.

In order to succeed in the fashion industry I needed to get a degree on a good university, I needed to find a place, a country where I knew I had a chance to reach my goals and unfortunately – or fortunately – Portugal wasn’t that place.

I heard a soft knock on my door before my mom’s head popped into the doorway. “Have you opened it yet?”

I am not the only one dreading to know if I was admitted or not into the university. Obviously, both of my parents and my elder brother are waiting for the response too. I shook my head pointing to my lap.

“Cláudia you know you’ll have to check it sooner or later.” My mom stated, her lips curving into a frown and worry filling her eyes. I sighed again but nodded anyways.

I knew I had to check it. I just needed a little more time to do it, to put into my brain that the possibility of not being accepted was higher than the other way around, to reassure myself I would be fine no matter what the letter said.

“MOM,” My brother’s voice echoed through the whole house breaking my thoughts. I saw my mother cringe at his tone and giggled – she was never fond of loud people. Soon enough he barged into my room in search for my mother without even acknowledging my presence.

“I already talked to Josh and everything’s settled for Cláudia. He’s searching for a flatmate as I told you previously and when I told him my little sister was going to study at Manchester’s UNI he immediately accepted sending me some pictures of the flat so we all could see if it was good enough. It’s great, it’s not as big as ours but it seems pretty cosy and... Oh and it has a huge bedroom with a joint bathroom that he said Cláudia could decorate the way she wants to. She’ll love it! The only problem is that between the UNI and the flat it’s about 181 miles and she has to take a train from London to Manchester everyday but still...” I watched amused as my brother kept rambling about how he had everything under control and how he already told Josh – who I suppose it was a friend of his – I would love to share a flat with him. I didn’t even know if I was admitted and he had everything planned.

“Rodrigo calm down.” My mom urged as my brother kept talking. “Your sister doesn’t even know if she got admitted. She didn’t open the admission letter yet.”

The look on his face was unreadable, something between the lines of shock, confusion and anger. I couldn’t put a finger on what he was thinking and that somehow annoyed me. I didn’t like the way everyone was trying to get me to open the envelope, it was my life, my decision and even though I knew their only aim was to help me, I still hated how they were treating me like a five-years-old child.

“What are you waiting for? Open the damn envelope!” My brother exclaimed throwing his arms in the air, obviously trying to cause a dramatic impact as he said it.

“Rodrigo you are not the boss of me. It’s my freaking life, leave me alone!” I snapped careless of how the words came out harsher than intended. My brother opened his mouth as an attempt to probably refute what I had said but my mother just shook her head, putting a hand on his shoulder and leading him out of the room.

I was once again alone in my room still on the same place as before and the same white envelope lying on my lap. Rodrigo’s words kept replaying in my head... “What are you waiting for?”... And seriously what was I waiting for? It’s not like if I open it later the answer will change, it will be the same no matter how much I wait.

Finally gaining the courage to do it, I pick the envelope, sliding one of my manicured nails through it ripping it open. Quickly I took the letter that was neatly inside of the now ripped envelope and start reading what it said.

It took me a while to overcome the shock stage that I was in. It took me even more time to realize what the letter said and once I did I was so incredulous that I didn’t even know what to do.

“MOM, RODRIGO,” I screamed out of the blues, minutes later both my mother and my brother were standing inside of my room with worried expressions. Rodrigo panting heavily, trying to catch up his breath probably because he ran upstairs once I let out the scream.

“What happened? Are you okay?” My mom urged me to answer. She was indeed completely concerned about me; I on the other hand just laughed pointing at my bed where the letter of admission laid.

My brother rushed to my bed taking the letter in his hands and reading it as his lips curved into a small smile. My mother expression went from concerned to confuse and once Rodrigo noticed, he started the letter from the beginning reading it out loud.

Dear Cláudia,

Thank you for your UCAS application.

I am delighted to be able to make you the unconditional offer for a place on the above course.”

And that was all it took for my brother and mother to engulf me on a huge hug and for the tears come rushing my mom’s eyes.

Four years! Four years far away from Portugal and far from my family but that’s okay because I will also be spending four freaking years fulfilling my freaking dream.
