The next few days felt like I was living in one of my favorite dramas. Ved was slowly becoming part of our daily life, though he was still the mysterious stranger who spoke in hushed tones and kept to himself. I, on the other hand, was doing everything I could to make him comfortable and, maybe, sneak into his good books. After all, I couldn't deny the fact that my heart did a little somersault every time he said my name.
"Mahira, stop daydreaming and pass the chai!" Mom called from the kitchen, interrupting my thoughts as I stared out of the window, imagining yet another romantic scene between Ved and me. In this one, he had just saved me from falling down a cliff. Totally reasonable, right?
"Oh, right! Coming!" I hurriedly grabbed the tray with two cups of steaming chai and headed to the living room where Ved was sitting, reading the newspaper my father had given him.
"Here you go!" I placed a cup in front of him, smiling brightly.
"Thanks." He barely looked up from the paper, but I could tell he wasn't really reading it. His eyes kept glazing over, lost in thought, probably trying to recall a past that was still hidden from him.
"So, what are you reading?" I asked, sitting across from him.
He folded the newspaper carefully, placing it on the table. "To be honest, I'm not really reading anything. I don't remember much, so even this feels strange. Like I'm in a world I don't belong to."
I bit my lip, feeling a pang of sympathy. It must be awful to have no clue who you are or where you come from. But I wasn't going to let the mood get too serious. That's not my style. I leaned forward with a mischievous grin.
"Well, lucky for you, you've landed in *my* world, where things are never boring."
Ved raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
" So never think you are alone and from now onwards you are my best friend. Whenever you need any help just one call and I will be there in front of you"
Ved's smile widened just a bit. "Well thank you best friend "
I laughed, feeling more at ease.
Our conversation was interrupted when my father walked in, glancing between Ved and me. "Mahira, beta, could you help your mother with lunch? I need to talk to Ved."
I nodded, standing up quickly. "Of course, Papa. I'll leave you both to your serious talk."
As I headed to the kitchen, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous. My father was kind, but he was also cautious, especially when it came to strangers. I knew he had questions for Ved—questions we all wanted answers to.
In the kitchen, my mother was kneading dough for chapatis, her hands moving rhythmically. She glanced up when I entered, her brow furrowed. "Mahira, be careful, okay?"
"Careful? About what?" I grabbed a knife and began chopping vegetables for the curry.
"About that man, Ved," she said quietly. "We don't know anything about him. What if he's dangerous? What if he's hiding something?"
I frowned, shaking my head. "Mom, he doesn't even remember his own past. How can he be dangerous?"
"I'm just saying... don't get too attached. He could leave anytime. Once his memory comes back, who knows what he'll remember. He might already have a life... a family."
I paused, her words sinking in. What if Ved wasn't meant to stay? What if his memories came back and he left, forgetting all about us? About... me?
But I quickly shook off the thought. "Mom, you worry too much. He's a nice guy. And even if he leaves, we'll have helped him when he needed it. That's what matters, right?"
She sighed but didn't argue further, her focus returning to the chapatis. Still, her words lingered in my mind as I finished up the vegetables and set the table for lunch.

After lunch, I found Ved sitting by the window, staring out at the busy street below. There was something about the way he looked—so lost, yet calm. I sat next to him, deciding to break the silence.
"Do you miss your memories?"
He didn't answer right away, his gaze still focused outside. "I don't know. I guess I miss knowing who I am. It's like... I'm floating in a void."
I bit my lip. "Maybe you were someone really important, you know? Like... a businessman. Or a prince in some foreign country, and now you've come to reclaim your throne."
Ved chuckled softly, finally turning to face me. "Or maybe I was just a regular guy."
"Well, whoever you were, I think you're meant to be here right now," I said, my voice quieter than usual. "You landed in my world, and that can't be just a coincidence."
He didn't respond, but something in his eyes softened. I could feel a connection growing between us, something unspoken but powerful. I wanted to help him, to be the one who brought color back into his life, even if it was just for a short time.
As the sun set, casting a warm glow across the room, I realized that this was no longer just a fantasy. Ved was here, real and right in front of me.
