The school hallway buzzed with the usual Friday afternoon chaos. Kristel, surrounded by a gaggle of giggling girls, was adjusting her perfectly-straight hair in a mirror. She caught Kyou's eye as he walked past, his head bent over a sketchbook. He quickly averted his gaze, but Kristel couldn't help but notice the faint blush on his cheeks.
She couldn't understand why he was so shy. He was a talented artist, and his drawings were often featured in the school newspaper. She had even overheard some of the girls whispering about how handsome he was.
But Kyou was just... different. He was quiet, reserved, and always seemed to be lost in his own world.
Lily, Kristel's best friend, nudged her with a smile. "Earth to Kristel," she said. "You're staring at him again."
"I can't help it," Kristel said, shaking her head. "He's just... intriguing."
"Intriguing?" Lily chuckled. "He's probably thinking about the next masterpiece he's going to draw. Or maybe he's just trying to avoid the throngs of fangirls."
Kristel rolled her eyes. "Whatever. He's just... different. And I like that."
Kristel and Lily headed towards their lockers, the noise of the hallway fading behind them. Kristel couldn't shake the image of Kyou's shy blush. He was so different from the boys she usually hung out with. They were loud, outgoing, and always vying for her attention. But Kyou seemed content to observe from the sidelines, his eyes always seeming to hold a hidden story.
Just then, a familiar voice called out to her. "Kristel! Wait up!" It was Jason, the captain of the school's football team and Kristel's current boyfriend. He swaggered towards them, his usual confident grin plastered on his face.
"Hey, Jason," Kristel said, trying to sound enthusiastic. She tried to ignore the way her stomach twisted at the sight of him. She had been dating Jason for a few months now, and while he was popular and good-looking, he was also a bit... shallow. He wasn't interested in her music or her thoughts, he just wanted her to be the perfect girlfriend for his Instagram feed.
"You ready for the dance tonight?" Jason asked, slinging an arm around her shoulder.
"Yeah, I guess," Kristel mumbled, trying to pull away from his grasp.
Lily rolled her eyes. "You're not really excited, are you?"
Kristel sighed. "Not really. I don't know, I just haven't been feeling it lately."
"Maybe you should just break up with him," Lily suggested. "He's not right for you."
"I know, I know," Kristel said. "But what if I can't find anyone better? What if everyone else is just like Jason?"
Lily squeezed her hand. "You'll find someone, Kristel. Just trust your gut."
Kristel wasn't so sure. She glanced back at the hallway, hoping to catch another glimpse of Kyou. But he was gone.
She sighed. Maybe she was just making things up. Maybe Kyou was just a shy artist, and she was reading too much into his quiet demeanor.
But somehow, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special about him. Something that she was only beginning to understand.
As Kristel and Lily headed towards their next class, Kristel couldn't stop thinking about Kyou. His shy blush, his quiet demeanor, the way he seemed to disappear into the background-it all intrigued her. She knew she had to talk to him, to see if he was as interesting as she imagined.
But how? What would she say?
Lily, sensing her friend's inner turmoil, gave her a knowing smile. "You know, Kristel, you could always just... talk to him."
"Yeah, right," Kristel scoffed. "Like that's easy."
"It's not like you're asking him to marry you," Lily said, rolling her eyes. "Just say hi. Ask him about his art."
"But what if he thinks I'm weird?" Kristel asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "What if he's not interested in talking to me?"
"He's probably just as nervous as you are," Lily said. "Just go for it. You've got this."
Kristel took a deep breath and nodded. She could do this. She had to do this.
She scanned the hallway, searching for Kyou's familiar figure. There he was, leaning against his locker, sketching in his notebook. His brow was furrowed in concentration, his lips slightly parted as if he was humming a melody to himself.
Suddenly, Kristel felt a surge of confidence. She wasn't sure what had changed, but she felt determined to break through his quiet facade.
Taking a deep breath, she walked towards him, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Hey," she said, trying to sound casual. "I'm Kristel."
Kyou looked up, his eyes widening in surprise. "Hi, Kristel," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm Kyou."
"I know," Kristel said, a smile spreading across her face. "I've seen your artwork in the school newspaper. It's really amazing."
Kyou blushed, his cheeks turning a deep shade of crimson. "Thanks," he mumbled, his gaze dropping to his sketchbook.
"What are you drawing?" Kristel asked, trying to sound interested.
"Just... some random stuff," Kyou said, his voice barely audible. "Nothing special."
"That's not true!" Kristel insisted. "Your drawings are really good. I've always loved art, but I'm not very good at it myself."
"Maybe I could give you some lessons sometime," Kyou offered, a hint of a smile gracing his lips.
Kristel's heart skipped a beat. "Really? That would be amazing."
And just like that, Kristel had broken through Kyou's shell. They were talking, laughing, and sharing stories. She was starting to see a side of him that he rarely showed to others.
And she was starting to realize that he might be even more interesting than she had imagined.
Kristel and Kyou were lost in conversation, their laughter echoing through the hallway. It was easy to talk to him, she realized. He was funny, insightful, and surprisingly passionate about his art. She was starting to understand the appeal of his quiet, observant nature.
As they continued to chat, Kristel noticed that the bell for their next class was about to ring. "I should probably get to class," she said, her voice laced with regret.
"Me too," Kyou said, a hint of disappointment in his voice. He closed his sketchbook, his gaze lingering on Kristel's face.
"So, uh... are you going to the dance tonight?" Kristel asked, her cheeks flushing a little. She hoped she wasn't being too forward.
Kyou's eyes widened. "The dance?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "I... I don't know. I don't usually go to those things."
"Well, you should come!" Kristel said, her voice gaining confidence. "It would be fun."
Kyou hesitated, his gaze dropping to his shoes. "I don't know," he mumbled. "I'm not really good at dancing."
"Don't worry about it," Kristel said, trying to sound reassuring. "I'm not very good either. We could just hang out."
Kyou looked up, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Really?"
"Yeah, really," Kristel said, her heart pounding in her chest. "I'd like that."
Kyou smiled, a genuine, happy smile that lit up his face. "Okay," he said. "I'll go."
Kristel felt a surge of excitement. She had actually done it. She had invited Kyou to the dance, and he had said yes.
"Great!" she said, her smile mirroring his. "I'll see you there."
Kyou nodded, his eyes shining with a newfound confidence. "See you there," he echoed, his voice a little stronger now.
As the bell rang, Kristel felt a rush of adrenaline. She had taken a chance, and it had paid off. She was starting to realize that her crush on Kyou might be deeper than she had thought.
