I could feel my heart pounding as I looked into her eyes, the weight of my secret bearing down on me. "He's not just my gym buddy," I said, my voice barely more than a whisper. "He's my lover. For the past six months." The silence that followed was deafening, a moment suspended in time before her scream shattered it, raw and primal, echoing through the walls of our tiny apartment. She lunged at me, fists flying, tears streaming down her face as she demanded to know how I could betray her like this. I tried to grab her wrists, to explain, but the words stuck in my throat. The truth was, I had fallen hard and fast, sucked into the thrill of clandestine meetings and stolen kisses, unable to resist the pull of something so forbidden. As I stood there, helpless, I realized the worst part wasn't her rage or the inevitable end of our relationship—it was the gnawing guilt that I had destroyed the person who once trusted me implicitly, all for a fleeting taste of forbidden passion. As her fists collided with my chest, the sting of her betrayal sank in deeper than any physical blow. I wanted to explain, to offer some justification for my selfish choices, but what could I possibly say? There was no excuse that could undo the damage I'd caused. Her sobs echoed through the apartment, a painful reminder of everything I had shattered.

"I gave you everything!" she screamed, her voice raw with agony. "How could you do this to me? To us?"

I had no answer. I stood frozen, letting her anger and grief wash over me. But then, in a moment of eerie calm, she stopped, her tear-streaked face contorting into something I couldn't quite read.

"You think this is the worst thing that could happen to me?" she whispered, her voice suddenly cold. "You think I didn't know?"

I blinked, confused, as she backed away, crossing her arms. "I knew. I've known for months. Every time you 'stayed late' at the gym, every unexplained text—I knew."

My stomach dropped. "What? You... you knew?"

She nodded, her lips curling into a bitter smile. "Oh, yes. But you're not the only one with secrets."

My pulse quickened. "What do you mean?"

She glanced at the bedroom door, and with a flick of her hand, it swung open. Standing in the doorway was someone I never expected to see—her lover. A woman. My mind reeled as I tried to process what was happening. The woman stood there, arms crossed, eyes full of disdain.

"You really thought you were the only one sneaking around?" my girlfriend asked, her voice dripping with venom. "While you were off with your gym buddy, I found someone else too. Someone who actually listens to me, cares about me—something you stopped doing a long time ago."

I stared at them, speechless. The twist in my gut tightened, and suddenly, the floor felt like it was slipping out from beneath me. I wasn't the only one hiding a double life. She had been playing me just as much as I had been playing her.

"Was this all a game to you?" I asked, my voice trembling.

She tilted her head, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "Maybe. Or maybe we were both just waiting to see who would break first. But now? Now it's over."

The woman beside her smiled smugly, and they both walked past me, heading for the door. "Good luck with your new life," she threw over her shoulder, not even bothering to look back.

As they left, the apartment fell into an oppressive silence. The weight of my guilt was suffocating, but now it was tangled with something else—humiliation. I wasn't the only one who had been unfaithful. We had both been living lies, hiding behind secrets, pretending to be something we weren't.

And now, I was left standing alone, the emptiness of our deception surrounding me like a cold, hollow void.
