A brown-and-white she-cat limped, her body aching. She must speak with Mousestar.
She had thought long and hard, deciding it was time for her to join the elder's den.
Her whole life, the brown-and-white she-cat had served her clan well, serving in several battles to draw out kittypets, rogues, loners, and more from their territory. Her body was weary from the countless seasons she served.
In fact, she served under three leaders her life—she was indeed old.
She remembered when she was a kit. The first leader she had ever known was Hollystar, a tortoiseshell tom with green eyes. He had died when she was only four moons old. He fought hard on his last two lives for the clan, killing badgers and snakes.
Hollystar died protecting his clan from the cobra that attempted to destroy their clan.
The brown-and-white elder also remembered the cat who took his place, Tinystar. Tinystar was a smaller cat than most, her striking white fur made her distinct at the time. Being the only purely white leader. Tinystar had been a good leader. Full of wisdom and justice beyond most cats in the clans. Tinystar's gentle yellow gaze was one the she-cat knew well.
Tinystar died trying to save Summerflower, who was a kittypet called Summer at the time. He was
washed away in the flood that occurred near CliffClan, and only Tinystar knew how to save him. However, her quick thinking could only save Summer. She pushed him onto a tree branch, and CliffClan pulled him out. To thank the clans, Summer and his siblings joined CliffClan—they were promising warriors. The old she-cat sighed, pushing past the leaves and foliage that covered the leader's den. She kinked her tail on the walls of the den, letting her leader know she was there.
Gray-and-white fur greeted her as she began to inform her leader of the news.
"Greetings, Mousestar," she addressed the slightly smaller cat.
Dark green eyes full of respect stared back at her, willing her to go on. This was further proved when Mousestar dipped his head. "Go on."
"I want to tell you something: I want to retire," she informed him.
The tom cat sits, curling his tail around his body. "I see." He takes a breath. "You have served this clan well, Loghare. AcornClan is proud to have you as an elder. May you find rest and peace for your aching bones in the elder's den."
Mousestar exits his den, indicating for Loghare to follow.
I hope my weary bones don't trip me up. She prays, hoping down the root that led to the leader's den from within the acorn tree.
...
A few moons passed. Loghare was settled in the Elder's Den well. She was chatting with Ant-thrush, an old den mate of hers from when she was a young warrior.
A cat similar in appearance to her padded inside with her head bowed. The deputy of the clan, a young black-and-white she-cat with yellow eyes, approached the Elders with a somber tone.
"Mousestar lost a life," the deputy informed.
Loghare stood up. Leaders lost lives all the time. What was the big deal?
Loghare searched the deputy's eyes. "Mousestar told me to tell you that he is on his last life. He doesn't think he'll make it much longer with the upcoming raid on the crocodiles infiltrating our borders. We have requested Finchstar and Frecklestar's aids, but we are unsure what will happen even then."
"Are you prepared to take over the clan if Mousestar dies, Aspentuft?" Loghare asks the black-and-white deputy.
The young deputy sighs, a brown-and-red apprentice bounding up to her. She looks down at him with affection. "Well, I'm not sure if I have the experience," she informs.
"But that won't happen for hopefully a couple of seasons, Loghare." Her tail flicks over to the apprentice who giggles, batting her tail with a paw. "I just...don't know if I have the ability to lead," she sighs, tail drooping. "I still have Haypaw to train."
Loghare nods. "Understandably so. Even then, you'll have us elders backing you at all points, so don't be a worrywart. You'll be fine whether or not Mousestar dies now or when Haypaw becomes warrior."
Loghare sighs as she indicates with her tail for Aspentuft to sit down beside her. Aspentuft obliges, leaning in.
"Let me tell you a story about myself," she mewed, taking a deep breath in remembrance.
"It all started with Hollystar's sudden passing. Tinystar—then called Tinycrawl—was still a fresh warrior much like yourself...."

Author's Note:
Hello and welcome to An Elder's Last Stand.
This is a Warriors Cats fanfiction I created even before the knowledge of The Elder's Quest, the newest Warriors series.
This story will not be like that series, since I've created my own plotline and everything for this story. However, the Erins are free to use this plotline if they ever read this story and are free to use the names.
I know they've used a few I have already, and they can absolutely use hare as an ending. I've noticed they've been using more unique endings from the small peek I took at the series and would love to see them use even more.
Regardless, thanks for reading! I'm immediately putting this story on hold because I don't plan on updating it for a while, although I do have part of that first chapter in my drafts written.
Anyway, leave some comments. I enjoy reading them. ❤️
