2.How many ethnic groups are there in China?
In 1979, it was of extraordinary significance for a ethnic group living in the hilly area at the end of the Hengduan Mountains in southwestern China. In June of that year, this ethnic group was officially recognized by the Chinese government and named the Jinuo people, joining 55 other ethnic groups, including the Han, as part of the Chinese nation. With this, following the proposal of the Five Nationalities Confederation after the Xinhai Revolution, China took a big step forward in the unity and integration of ethnic groups.

However, not all ethnic groups were as fortunate as the Jinuo people. In the early 1980s, the Mosuo people, known for their ancient walking marriage system and residing in the picturesque area of the Lugu Lake, did not receive recognition as their own ethnic group and were hastily included as a branch of the Naxi ethnic group. The same fate befell the Kucong people, who reside in the Ailao Mountains, as they were incorporated into a branch of the Lahu ethnic group.
To this day, there are still unconfirmed ethnic affiliations for the Mang, Kemmu, Yang, Sheng, Bajia, Gejia, Gurung, White Horse Tibetan, Xijia, Miao, Guqiang, Dan, Yi, Lingshan, Zhe Lai Zhai, Sherpa, Ainu, Tsai, and the Qing people who are mistakenly referred to as the Highland Han. This also includes the Amis and Paiwan people, who are collectively referred to as the indigenous peoples of Taiwan.

It is worth mentioning that the majority of unidentified ethnic groups, who have not yet been recognized, reside around the Hengduan Mountains. Among the 55 confirmed ethnic groups apart from the Han, most have several or even dozens of branches. This phenomenon is not only different in terms of daily life, but also in the myths and legends of ethnic origins, leading to diverse beliefs. This has led to confusion and misconceptions in tracing the origins of Chinese civilization, resulting in numerous historical gaps.
