5. The Five Zones of the Chinese Civilization Epoch
Anyone who has read the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" must have a question: why the directions described in the book are not the usual east, west, south, north, and center, but instead south, west, north, east, and center? It can be said that without unraveling this question, misunderstandings caused by directions can lead to a series of errors (such as the incorrect positioning of Kunlun Mountain during the Western Han Dynasty, resulting in even more inaccuracies in locating the source of the Yellow River). In terms of geographical orientation, buildings in China located in the northeast and northwest regions are often situated in basins and plains, facing south; those in the central plains area might face north; those in the southeast and southwest should face west.
This positioning ensures that indoor spaces are shielded from wind and receive adequate sunlight. In ancient Chinese architecture, there are different styles: stilted houses (hanging houses and bamboo houses) are prominent among the Dai and Zhuang ethnic groups who prefer living near water; adobe houses and mushroom houses are popular among the Yi and Hani ethnic groups who prefer living on mountainsides; tiled houses are favored by the Miao and Yao ethnic groups who prefer living in high mountains. The establishment of the Five Zones is primarily determined by the flow of water, followed by the alignment according to the five stars of south, west, north, east, and center.
The southern star represents fire, the western star represents metal, the northern star represents water, the eastern star represents wood, and the central star represents earth. This positioning is aimed at reducing natural disasters and preventing flooding (referring to the Pre-Heaven Bagua diagram). Most importantly, when establishing settlements based on clan living, the first structure built is the central altar for worship, followed by the construction of houses facing south, west, north, and east. This means that when a clan migrates to a new location, the first structure is not for human and livestock habitation but a sacred site for worshiping deities.
It is essential that the living quarters for humans and animals are never higher than the altar for deity worship, or else it could incur divine punishment. Eventually, these five stars in the sky evolved into the Five Elements, becoming closely intertwined with human destiny.
During the epoch where Earth was positioned as the central star, humanity revolved around Kunlun Mountain. This led to the categorization of the regions into the Southern Barbarians, Western Di, Huaxia, Northern Di, and Eastern Yi. Unfortunately, future generations misunderstood the significance of this division, causing them to stray further from the correct path, deviating from the principles and teachings.
6.The Origin of Huaxia
Before the establishment of dynasties, ancient China was referred to as Huaxia, Shenzhou, Chixian Shenzhou, or Zhonghua. Among these, the term Huaxia generally refers to the Chinese nation. However, it is puzzling that the origin of the term Huaxia is not clearly documented with definitive annotations. Some believe that Huaxia refers to people dressed in beautiful clothes exuding charm and vigor. This interpretation may just be a source of amusement. So, how did Huaxia come into being? This leads us to mention Kunlun Mountain.
Kunlun Mountain, vast and towering, consists of snowy peaks (mountains with perpetual snow), fiery mountains (volcanic mountains that continuously erupt), great chasms, vast fields (broad high-altitude terraces and wetlands), large hills, expansive forests and valleys, four major rivers, precious minerals, exotic birds and animals, enchanting flora, mystical clouds and mist, crystal peaks and caves, flowing springs and beautiful pools, and divine spirits (extraordinary and awe-inspiring otherworldly deities). The question of whether this mountain or range, resembling a fairyland, truly exists has been a focal point of debate.
