CHAPTER FIVE

Humble Beginnings

Tiana and Kamala have been settled for about a week in their first apartment in San Francisco. The couple now work on establishing their careers in the city they now call home.

As the golden morning light spilled into our small apartment, I could hear the soft sound of Kamala humming a tune in the kitchen. I stretched under the covers, feeling the warmth of the sun wrap around me like a cozy blanket. Raven greeted me at the foot of the bed with a soft meow. Today, we were heading to her mom's house for breakfast, an occasion I'd come to cherish with each passing visit.

"Hey sleepyhead!" Kamala called out, her voice bright and melodic. "I made your favorite!"

I pulled myself out of bed and shuffled into the kitchen, the aroma of cinnamon and vanilla wafting towards me. On the counter sat a saucer plate with a homemade latte. My stomach growled in response, and I couldn't help but grin at her.

"Did you really need to spoil me this much?" I asked, leaning against the kitchen door frame. Watching her bustle around, her long hair falling in waves, I felt a rush of gratitude. It was moments like this that reminded me how lucky I was to have her in my life.

"Absolutely. Now hurry up and sip so we can get going! My mom has been planning this get together for days. She claims she's perfected her famous pancakes just for us," she said with a playful smirk, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

I sat down and began to sip, each sip sweeter than the last. "You know I'm not complaining. Your mom's cooking is worth getting up for," I said between sips.

After I finished, we dressed quickly, the excitement palpable between us. I wore a light blue sundress that I had saved for special occasions, and Kamala looked effortlessly stunning in a simple black t-shirt and jeans that accentuated her figure. We both admired ourselves in the mirror for a second, and I couldn't help but lean over and press a quick kiss to her cheek.

As we walked out the door, I couldn't shake the feeling of butterflies dancing in my stomach. It wasn't just a breakfast; it was a family thing. Kamala's mom had welcomed me with open arms since our first meeting, treating me like another daughter. But still, the idea of Kamala bringing me home made my nerves tingle. What if they thought I didn't deserve her? What if I accidentally messed something up?

Kamala sensed my anxiety. "You okay?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to look me in the eyes.

"Just a bit nervous," I admitted. "But I'm excited too."

She held my hand as we hopped into her car, and in those small moments of connection, I felt my worries start to dissipate. The drive to Oakland was filled with laughter and the old music blaring from the speakers. We sang along, voices rising in harmony, the world outside flashing by as we careened past colorful murals and cafés simmering with early morning energy.

When we arrived at her mom's house, Kamala squeezed my hand a little tighter. I could see her taking a deep breath, probably just as anxious. We rang the doorbell, and within seconds, the door swung open to reveal a whirlwind of warmth and laughter.

"Tiana! Kamala! I've been waiting for you!" Her mom enveloped us both in a tight embrace, her familiar scent of jasmine and freshly baked bread wrapping around me like a hug of its own.

"Hey, Mom! We're so excited for breakfast!" Kamala said, her nervousness melting away.

Inside, the dining table was already adorned with an array of dishes—thick pancakes, fresh fruit, whipped cream, and of course, Kamala's mom's secret maple syrup recipe. As we sat down, the conversation flowed like honey. Her mom had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged, and before I knew it, we were sharing stories, laughter echoing around the room.
