Okay, so picture this : Perci Jackson, daughter of Poseidon and all-around troublemaker extraordinaire, was standing in her lovely mothers apartment with her best friend Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and professional know-it-all (in the best way possible, of course) after an epic water gun fight ( Perci promised to not use her powers so that it was fair ). suddenly of course like a normal Tuesday for them something felt off. The problem was that it was not Tuesday. The air smelled like a mix of sea salt and sun-baked olives, which was pretty normal for Greece. What wasn't normal was that 1 they were not in Greece and 2 the weird energy crackling around them, like Zeus was about to throw the mother of all tantrums.
"Did you feel that?" Perci asked, her sea-green eyes scanning the horizon. She twirled a lock of her dark hair, which was still somehow dry even after their earlier water gun session. Knowing Perci, she was probably hoping to spot a monster, or maybe a blue cheeseburger stand. With her, you could almost never tell.
Annabeth nodded, her stormy gray eyes narrowed in that way that meant her brain was working overtime. "It was like... a pulse. As if the earth just hiccupped or something."
Before Perci could make a witty comment about Gaea's indigestion (because let's face it, that's totally where her mind was going), the ground started shaking like it was auditioning for "Greece's Got Talent." A light brighter than Apollo's smile on picture day exploded from the middle of the grove, forcing them to cover their eyes.
When the impromptu light show finally dimmed, they found themselves somewhere that definitely wasn't on any mortal map. Or demigod map, for that matter. And trust me, we've got some pretty weird maps.
The sky looked like someone had spilled blue food dye all over it, with weird golden clouds that shimmered like the scales on Perci's favorite bracelet. The trees were taller than the Athena Parthenos and twisted like Dionysus after a wild party. The air felt buzzy, like they'd just chugged ten espressos and chased them with a Red Bull.
"Uh, Annabeth?" Perci whispered, her heart doing the cha-cha in her chest. "I don't think we're in New York anymore. Unless New York got a serious makeover in the last five minutes."
Annabeth squinted at the horizon, where a bunch of crazy towers spiralled up into the sky like they were trying to give Olympus a run for its money. "Yeah, unless someone decided to redecorate the entire country, I'd say we're in a whole different dimension."
They looked at each other, both thinking the same thing: We are so grounded when we get back. Assuming they got back, that is. With their luck, they'd probably end up having to save the universe or something equally inconvenient.
"Maybe it was that weird pulse?" Perci suggested, her forehead wrinkled in thought. "Like, a portal or something? You know, the usual demigod Tuesday."
"Could be," Annabeth nodded, always the voice of reason in their chaos. "We need to figure out how to get back before something tries to eat us. Or worse, before we miss dinner. You know how cranky you get when you're hungry."
As they started walking, the ground felt squishy under their feet, like they were treading on the world's biggest Jell-O mold. Weird creatures zoomed by - some looked like birds that had raided a craft store's glitter section, others like flying goldfish that had escaped from a psychedelic aquarium. Annabeth instinctively reached for her drakon bone sword. "Stay sharp. Who knows what's out here. Knowing our luck, probably something with way too many teeth."
Suddenly, a growl rumbled through the grove, sounding like a lion with a bad case of indigestion. They turned to see a massive beast emerge from the shadows - a not so mini but smaller version of Cerberus "Oh Styx, we're in trouble."
