As the days passed, Lisa couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something bad was brewing. Despite Jennie’s reassurances, Kai’s persistence weighed heavily on her mind. Each time Jennie’s phone buzzed, Lisa braced herself for the possibility that it was him again. And, more often than not, it was.
Kai’s texts had started to blur the line between persistent and obsessive. He wasn’t threatening, but his refusal to accept Jennie’s boundaries felt like an unwelcome shadow hanging over their relationship. Jennie tried to brush it off, but Lisa could tell it was bothering her more than she let on.
“Maybe you should block him,” Lisa suggested one evening as they sat together on Jennie’s couch, scrolling through the latest barrage of messages from Kai. “He’s not getting the hint.”
Jennie frowned, staring down at her phone. “I’ve thought about it, but I don’t know… it feels harsh. We were friends once, and I don’t want to make things worse by shutting him out completely.”
Lisa’s frustration boiled just below the surface. Jennie’s kindness, her desire to let people down gently, was one of the things Lisa loved about her. But in this case, it felt like Kai was taking advantage of that kindness. “He’s *already* making things worse by not respecting your boundaries,” Lisa said, trying to keep her voice calm. “It’s not your responsibility to protect his feelings, Jennie. Especially when he’s ignoring yours.”
Jennie sighed, leaning back against the couch. “I know you’re right. I just… I don’t want to escalate things. Maybe if I give him a little more time, he’ll back off.”
Lisa bit her lip, forcing herself to nod, even though every instinct was telling her that this situation was far from over. She didn’t want to push Jennie too hard, but at the same time, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Kai’s persistence was putting cracks in their relationship, cracks that might grow if they didn’t address them soon.

The tension came to a head one Saturday afternoon.
Jennie had gone out for lunch with some of her friends, leaving Lisa to spend a quiet day catching up on her studies. She had planned to meet up with Jennie later, but as the day wore on, Lisa’s anxiety started to build. Kai hadn’t messaged Jennie all day, which, instead of feeling like a relief, only made Lisa more on edge. The silence felt too deliberate, too calculated.
Her unease turned to dread when Jennie called her a few hours later, her voice tight with frustration.
“Lisa, I need to tell you something,” Jennie began, her words rushed and filled with tension.
Lisa’s heart sank. “What’s going on?”
“I ran into Kai. He showed up at the restaurant where I was having lunch with my friends. He just… sat down at our table like it was no big deal.”
Lisa’s pulse quickened, anger flashing through her. “Are you serious? What did he want?”
“He said he ‘just happened to be in the area’ and thought he’d say hi. But I could tell it was more than that. He tried to talk to me about us—about how he thinks I’m making a mistake by being with you.” Jennie’s voice wavered, the frustration clear. “I told him, again, that I’ve moved on, that he needs to stop doing this. But he just kept saying I’m confused, that I don’t know what I want.”
Lisa’s stomach churned, a mix of anger and hurt bubbling up inside her. “He *said* that? That you don’t know what you want?”
Jennie let out a sharp breath. “Yeah. And I told him he was wrong. I told him that I love you, and nothing he says or does is going to change that. But I don’t know, Lisa. He’s not backing down. I don’t know what else to do.”
