Chapter 3
Shift.

The kiss lingered longer than it should have, when her lips left my cheek a tingling sensation remained. I can't stop the goofy and sappy smile that spreads across my cheeks like butter on toast.

"You're welcome."
Harper says with a chuckle. I turn to the clock that is above the door. The next doctor will be here for the shift swap any minute, I dont want to leave Harper. Her eyes flicker to the clock too, her gaze shifts to mine almost pleadingly.
"Dont go...stay with me..."
She begged as she nuzzled her head into the crook of my neck.

She whispers something inaudible before hugging me tightly like she didn't want me to leave. The door opened with a soft creak, I jumped in surprise. Harper was on my lap, cuddling me with the painkiller injections on the back of her hand, striving through her smooth skin. She rapidly gets off of my lap, I'm almost disappointed.

"I'll take the night shift today, mate..."
I said, my voice cracking in slight shock that was recovering. The doctor was a man who's gaze was on Harper's thighs and I didn't like it, not one bit. Harper seemed to dislike this doctor, and so far so did I. I give him a warning glare to leave. A soft scoff escaped the man who was bearded and bald with slightly tanned skin.
"It's my shift."
He muttered in a deep voice.

"And it's my patient."
I replied, watching as the man scowled. I turned to Harper, raising an eyebrow and silently asking if she minded this doctor. She gave me a look, a look that told me she needed me. I held her hand that didn't have the injection in, in mine, caressing it comfortingly.

"Mm...Still my shift."
The man grumbled lowly.

"Dont you wanna go out somewhere? Get a fresh whiskey on your awesome break? Maybe head home or maybe go clubbing using this gift card, mate!"

I got up, giving him the drawn card.
I gave him a fake gift card. Harper mimicked gift cars with her drawing skills and she gave me a set on my birthday so I could get discounts. If no one noticed that is. I always kept the set in chest pocket for good luck. The man reluctantly left. I sat down on the hospital bed beside harper.

The door shut with him out into the hallway. Harper smiles happily before eagerly hopping back onto my lap, ignoring her injection and wrapping her arms around me, her head's against my chest and she looks almost heavenly. She looks up at me with adoring silver eyes and my breath is hollow like shattered shells you find on the beach.

"Cheeky..."

I chuckled nervously as I felt heat rushing through my cheeks.
