I reflect on Nikolai's every movement, anticipating his actions. As he shifts his arm, I prepare to counter with my opposite arm.
"Could you please back the fuck away from my wife?" I fix him with a stare filled with an intensity I didn't know I possessed.
"Sure, but did you truly have to tarnish my handsome face over a woman?"Nikolai rolls his eyes.
She's not just a woman. I don't know why this makes me so angry but with the amount of time I've spent with her I've come to tolerate her. Hearing another person disrespect her in such a way lights something negative in me.
"I'll break your jaw." I grit out balling my hand in a tight fist.
"The one Sofia kisses?" he teases with a stupid smirk.
That's all it takes for me to and him one final blow.
I'm pulled back by an immense force and Sofia steps in front of me.
"Nikolai, I need you to understand I'm married and you can't expect to flirt with me in public and get away with it." Sofia glares at Nikolai, he looks taken aback at her serious tone but nods with an eye roll.
"And you can't be punching everyone who makes you angry." Sofia glares at me grabbing my hand and interlacing our fingers. "Let's go."
As we left the party, Sofia and I walked together into the dark night. The moonlight illuminated the sky, casting a soft glow over everything. Sofia seemed preoccupied, perhaps too preoccupied to notice the stars above us. I couldn't tell if she was upset with me or with Nikolai. In all the time I've known her, she had never been this quiet.
When the valet handed me the car key, I followed Sofia to the car parked at the bottom of the stairs. As we reached the car, she asked for the keys and I tossed them to her. The drive back to the hotel was silent, allowing me to admire how stunning she looked in her long, flowing black dress - a stark contrast to her usual formal attire. I almost complimented her, but I quickly dismissed the thought. After all, why would I feel the need to compliment a woman I'm only in a marriage of convenience with? It's not like I have any real feelings for her.
"You could have stayed," I blurted out, and Sofia glanced at me questioningly.
"You should have stayed at the ball. You didn't have to come with me," I grumbled.
"Ales, there are many reasons I didn't stay. For one, I'm tired. And secondly, I technically can't stay at the ball, as Sofia Garcia is forever banned from the annual Mafia Ball Event."
"But you are Sofia Russo now." I roll my eyes and she gives me a blank look. Blood still trickles down my face. Sofia's eyes travel to the trail of fresh blood but ignores it.
"Yes, but I'm still the body of Sofia Garcia dumbass."
We enter the hotel's parking lot and she parks the car as an employee immediately rushes to help her out of the car and take the car away. Sofia hands him the key and we walk into the hotel together heading straight to the elevator where we make it to the top floor.
