As the hours passed, the road stretched out endlessly before them. The families settled into the rhythm of the drive, each car filled with its own atmosphere. Zariah, with Sariyah nestled beside her, tried to focus on her phone to pass the time, but the odd encounter with Dess kept replaying in her mind. Every so often, she would glance at Dess, who remained lost in her own world, seemingly unaware of the strange impression she had left.

The landscape outside the window changed from the familiar terrain of San Diego to the sprawling, sun-scorched expanse of the desert. The scenery was vast and monotonous, making the drive feel even longer. The radio played softly in the background, and the occasional conversation between the adults drifted into Zariah’s awareness, but her thoughts remained fixated on Dess.

A few hours into the journey, Zariah decided to take a break from her phone. She looked over at Dess, who was now fiddling with her earbuds, her gaze still directed outside. The voice she had heard earlier seemed like a distant echo now, but it still lingered in her mind.

Sage’s car was a few cars ahead, and Zariah could just make out her silhouette in the front seat. Sage seemed to be engrossed in a book, her face partially obscured by the cover. Zariah wondered if Sage had noticed anything unusual about Dess or if she was experiencing the same unsettling vibe.

In an attempt to distract herself, Zariah reached for a bag of snacks she had brought along. She carefully opened a packet of chips, trying to make as little noise as possible so as not to disturb Sariyah. She took a few bites, the crunch of the chips providing a temporary distraction.

As the sun began to set, casting an orange glow over the horizon, Marcus and Teresa decided it was time for a brief rest stop. The cars pulled into a gas station, and everyone stretched their legs and grabbed refreshments. Zariah used the opportunity to grab some fresh air, but her thoughts were still consumed by Dess’s odd behavior.

While the adults filled up the tanks and grabbed snacks, Zariah took a moment to approach Dess, who was standing near the car, staring off into the distance.

“Hey, Dess,” Zariah said cautiously. “You okay? You seemed a little... out of it earlier.”

Dess turned to face Zariah, her expression neutral. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired, I guess.”

Zariah nodded, still unsure. “Alright, well, we’ve got a long way to go. Let me know if you need anything.”

Dess gave a faint smile and turned back to watch the sunset. Zariah decided to let it go for now, hoping that her worries were just a result of stress from the unexpected changes.

The families regrouped and got back on the road. The night settled in, and the car lights cut through the dark expanse. The drive continued, with occasional stops for food and rest, and conversations about the future slowly beginning to replace the silence.

As the hours ticked by, Zariah found herself growing more accustomed to the presence of her new family members. Sariyah slept peacefully beside her, and the initial tension started to ease. Dess and Jessika, despite the strange encounter, seemed to be adjusting, and Zariah hoped that the coming days would bring more understanding and less anxiety.

By the time they reached Texas, the sky was starting to lighten with the first signs of dawn. The trip had been long and exhausting, but the promise of a new beginning lay ahead. They pulled up to the house that would be their new home, the journey finally at an end.

Zariah looked at the house, feeling a mix of anticipation and trepidation. This was the start of a new chapter for all of them, and though the road ahead was uncertain, she hoped that the strange and unsettling moments of the trip were just the beginning of a journey toward understanding and acceptance.

As they unloaded the car and prepared to settle into their new lives, Zariah took a deep breath, trying to push aside the lingering unease. She was ready to face whatever came next, with her family, new and old, by her side.
